Liquor Store Sales on Sunday Now Legal In 31 States
NewsWire ^ | 7/02/04 | Distilled Spirits Council

WASHINGTON, July 2 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Liquor stores will be open on Sundays in 31 states, up from 21 just two and a half years ago, the Distilled Spirits Council said today, noting that the trend of rolling back Prohibition-era blue laws is catching fire in states across the nation.

Lifting Sunday sales bans is a trend that is being driven on the one hand by the need to increase consumer convenience in a modern era where Sunday is the second busiest shopping day of the year, the Council noted, and on the other hand by the desire for increased tax revenues in cash-strapped states without raising taxes.

The result is 31 states have approved Sunday liquor store sales (Ohio's repeal law goes into effect in September) with 10 coming in the last two years. Oregon began the recent trend in 2002, followed in 2003 by Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Delaware and New York. This year, Kansas, Idaho, Virginia, Ohio and Rhode Island have followed suit by allowing Sunday sales in liquor stores.

"More than 70 years after the repeal of Prohibition, states are rapidly modernizing the marketplace for distilled spirits," said Council President Peter Cressy. "Across the country, consumers are enjoying the convenience and choice that come from being able to purchase distilled spirits products on Sundays, and states are gaining additional tax revenue without raising taxes."

Of course. What other reason could there be?

The headline is wrong. They should have said liquor sales are legal on Sunday.

Most people who buy liquor stores buy them during the week, anyway.

Here here. I can't beleive there are still states where you can't get booze on Sundays. Criminy, how can they get through football without at least one drinkie.

I wish Texas would take note of this.

First, they need to allow the liquor stores to be open after 9PM, then we need Sunday sales. Then, they need to move up the legal time for beer sales on Sunday to 10AM.

The stupid "No beer before noon on Sunday" law plays havoc with the Noon Cowboys games.

My township is dry on Sundays for store sales. Restaurants ok. Have to drive three miles to buy a six pack on Sundays.

This has got to be true. Because if I buy enough whiskey on Saturday to last me through Sunday, I'm not taxed, right?

As is the case with my fellow Eagles fans, we proudly start imbibing in the parking lots at 10:00 AM regardless of game time. (Yes even Monday night games)

I do, but why should I not be able to purchase alcohol on Sunday? I understand that it is a "blue law" but what is the reason that people give for NOT changing the law? Lat time I checked, the purchase of alcohol was legal.

It appears this story was written on a Sunday in one of those 31 states.
