Former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said she believes Wisconsin's voter ID law made a difference in last year's election.
The former Secretary of State, U.S. senator and first lady spoke Tuesday night in Milwaukee as part of an effort to promote her book, "What Happened," which looked at the 2016 presidential race.
Clinton told about 2,500 audience members at Milwaukee's Riverside Theater that the state's voter ID law suppressed turnout among students, minorities and the elderly.
"In an election, which I remember well, was decided by a razor-thin margin, that makes a difference. This issue hasn't gotten enough attention. It is a civil rights issue," she said.
The law's Republican backers, like Gov. Scott Walker, say the ID law reduces voter fraud.
Some Democrats say another reason Clinton lost in Wisconsin is that she didn't campaign in the state last fall. During a lengthy standing ovation for her at the Riverside, Clinton joked that she should have come back to the state sooner.
Clinton also said several elections this week in Virginia and New Jersey give her optimism Democrats are making a comeback. Clinton said in her book that she encourages Democrats to stay politically engaged and active.
"And just this week, we saw what a difference that can make because in elections across America, hope beat hate, right?" Clinton said.
She also urged more women to run for political office.

How many people do not have ID? Seriously. The Dems claim that voter ID laws will suppress voting, but then have to find people like retired nuns who don’t have any photo ID. When it came time to take my grandfather’s driver’s license my mother had the BMV make a non-license ID card for him.

She is right. OUr voter ID law did make the difference.
It prevented the democrats from taking up the normal massive amounts of busloads of Illinois democrats to come up to Milwaukee and Madison and vote under other peoples’ names.
They still filtered up but not in the normal gigantic orchestrated droves since the 1990s.
Wisconsin has steadily shifted red for a very long time. At the state level and eventually the federal we regained a senator spot and are very heavy on the representatives.
Our counties are overwhelmingly red. The corruption in Milwaukee and Madison counties by the dems have thwarted the true winners for a very long time and they could not pull it off with the voter ID law preventing their favorite tactic, knowing which democrat voters would not vote because they were dead or infirm and using those names to have someone else vote democrat under. Also raiding nursing homes and getting old folks who are out of it, vote democrat.
