Another Delusion:
“If the Democrats/Left would put identity politics and social justice issues on the backburner and focus on economic populism for a couple of election cycles, they would sweep the 2018 midterms and the 2020 general elections.”

I say delusion not as a derogatory term but, a recognition they are dealing in “Other Worldy” hopes...

I was speaking with a liberal friend last evening who pointed out that the Dems at a national level have responded to the Bernie wave by making fresh, new, exciting faces the spokespeople and standard-bearers of their party: Hillary Clinton, Maxine Waters, Tom Perez, and Nancy Pelosi. I didn’t have the heart to mention Chelsea because I think he would have slugged me...

Best post of the month...maybe of 2017 so far.

2018 could swing widely either direction. 2018 depends on us, and on the Dem activists. We need to agree on a winning candidate for each takeover seat ... and not somebody just because it is their turn. Independent of the candidate, we need to build an effective ground game in the target districts, the purple districts. We need to knock on doors to add to the database the people hiding in plain sight.

Personally, I hope the Democrats stay asleep, with restless fever dreams making them lash out while screaming hateful things and sounding deranged.

I haven’t read it, because I find Salon incredibly offensive. I’m assuming Salon readers will also find the article incredibly offensive.

the extreme and ingenious gerrymandering of congressional districts locked in by Republican state legislators after the 2010 census virtually guarantees a GOP House majority until the next census and at least the 2022 midterms. Yes, the widely-hated health care law might put a few Republican seats in play that weren’t before. But the number of genuine “swing” districts is vanishingly small, and it would require a Democratic wave of truly historic dimensions to overcome the baked-in GOP advantage.

That's right, we had greater control over redistricting in 2010 to majorities were it greatly mattered, after the 2010 census

We need even more majorities in 2018 and 2020 to ensure we re-draw disctrict maps after the 2020 census.

This will ensure Republican domination for a decade and the Dems will wail and commit further acts of violence that will be a turnoff for a good many of the older generation, pushing them more and more toward Republican representation.

Dominating 2018 and 2020 ensures we also get another four years of Trump/Pence thus, taking over the Supreme Court with a 3 more SCOTUS judges , after Gorsuch and a fair amount of the Federal Judiciary

Reagan and Clinton had the highest number of federal judicial appointments at almost 400 over their two terms and I look for Trump to break that record with a party that has no numericaly significant opposition.

So, let your friends on the left whine, gloat or whatever the hell it is they do, as it a childish fantasy on one part to engage in the hyperbolic fantasies of impeachment and a lack of the ability to understand the politics of it all on a map and using 3rd grade math

For my part, I encourage their simplistic focus on something that isn't there and can't be fabricated out of anything solid, while helping them understand they needn't despair.

The Republic, after all , has withstood many evolutions over our history and except for a terrible time in the 1860's we had no real prospects for a revolution and I ask them "Do you forsee a unifying point of disagreement in an error of the humanities of America that would unite two sides to actually go to war with each other and would you enjoy seeing that if you could elucidate the problem?"

I always get nothing back and encourage them to maybe concentrate an areas where they really can win, most of the time or take up a more satisfying hobby and watch the politics over the next decade as an observer, because your vote, in most of America, no longer matters

Oh! And you might find something else to ban, like more plastic, because time after time, your views on banning guns is part of an ever shrinking minority and laws in each of the states continue to expand gun rights and with a majority federal judiciary and eventually SCOTUS, even California is going to be rolled back.

'Ave nice day - - - Das Vi Danya...

If the Republican Establishment doesn’t quit sabotaging Pres. Trump’s agenda there will be a bloodbath in 2018 but it will be the Republicans who are the victims.

And that makes it OUR responsibility to make sure that Establishment GOP pols are challenged and defeated in as many primaries as possible.. especially those where the RNC and GOP were not expecting any opposition.
