President Obama says he wasn’t all that surprised by Donald Trump’s upset victory in the presidential election.
“So I think the odds of Donald Trump winning were always around 20 percent,” Obama said in a Rolling Stone interview published Tuesday. “That [doesn't] seem like a lot, but one out of five is not that unusual. It's not a miracle."
Obama spoke to the magazine’s publisher, Jann Wenner, the day after Election Day, when the level of shock at the White House seemed very high.
Dozens of stunned staffers, many of whom had tears in their eyes, stood in the Rose Garden to watch the president address the election results.
Obama’s assessment of Trump’s odds differs from his declaration in February that the real estate mogul “will not be president.”
But as the race wore on, Obama warned voters Trump had a real shot at winning.
“Now, this should not be a close race, but it’s going to be a close race,” he said at a rally in Charlotte, N.C., four days before Election Day.
Even though Obama said he was “disappointed” by the possibility Trump could roll back his core accomplishments, he told Wenner he wasn’t “dismayed” by the outcome because his administration has shaped “a generation to think about being inclusive, being fair, caring about the environment.”
“And they will have growing influence year by year, which means that America over time will continue to get better.”

It makes no sense to the average guy to listen to meaningless numbers. By the election day the media and the dems were only talking to themselves and had enclosed their little safe space in a bubble of happy talk.
The most interesting parallel is to Jappan in WWII. The Japanese had psyched themselves up and believed any lie they told themselves about how they were wining the war while we were taking islands from them day by day month after month.
They were so hopped up on their own propaganda that they did not see any need to surrender after the first atomic bomb. It took a second bomb and intervention by the emperor before the military establishment backed down. They were sure they were wining and were gods chosen.

Since we had absolutely no reliable information regarding the outcome in advance, I’d have to go with Schrödinger’s assessment - Trump had a 50% chance of winning.
