Poll: Trump Gets His Support From White Protestants

A national poll out Thursday shows Hillary Clinton ahead of Donald Trump by double-digits. The poll also breaks down support by religion and finds that white Protestants are Trump’s most supportive demographic.

The Public Religion Research Institute found that Clinton leads nationwide among registered voters with 48 percent, Trump follows with 35 percent and two percent backed Libertarian Gary Johnson. This poll, unlike others, broke down support for each candidate by registered voters’ religious preferences.

Trump’s support is strongest among white evangelical Protestants. Sixty-two percent of them back Trump and 23 percent support Clinton. Trump also leads among white mainline Protestants with 47 percent. Clinton follows at 37 percent.

Clinton leads with every other religious group polled — Catholics, black Protestants, and “unaffiliated.” PRRI did not poll Jews or Muslims....

We go through this every cycle. White Catholics narrowly favor Trump over Clinton, but the large number of Hispanic Catholics and Hillary's overwhelming support among Latinos, gives her a win among all Catholic voters.

Some day, non-White Protestants will be a larger part of America's Protestant population and -- if other trends hold -- a larger share of the Protestant vote will go to Democrats.

It is true, though, that while White Catholics and Mainline Protestants show the same level of support for Trump, those White Catholics are more likely than Mainline Protestants to vote for Hillary (Mainline or non-Evangelical Protestants are more likely to be undecided don't knows).

Non-religious voters -- those who identify with no religious group -- are overwhelmingly for Hillary, and many of them grew up Protestant.

My kinfolk are also Italian Roman Catholic and live in the New York area.

About 2 to 1 they support Trump....a few cousins like Hillary....something is wrong with them.
