Last Night Was the Turning Point in Trump's Campaign
PJ Media ^ | August 19, 2016 | Roger Kimball

Donald Trump cleared up one thing in his speech in Charlotte, North Carolina, last night: he is running to win.

Throughout this very odd election cycle, some pundits have periodically suggested that Trump wasn't serious in his run for the presidency. First, it was said that he got into the race simply to garner publicity, to burnish his "brand." He himself, it was said, was surprised that he did so well in the primaries.

When it became clear that he was poised to win the nomination, the story changed slightly. Now, he was said to be playing the buffoon because he didn't really want the job. The same line was repeated and amplified post-convention whenever Trump went off-message or waved The National Enquirer about. Anything having to do with Ted Cruz really seemed to set him off. And off he went, as his plummeting poll numbers showed.

But these last couple of weeks have shown the world a new, more disciplined Donald Trump.

His speeches on the economy, on foreign policy, on policing and race relations, and -- just last night -- his brilliant speech that touched on everything from national security to race relations, free trade, immigration, and Obamacare, have shown that he is deadly earnest about winning this election.

To employ a phrase that Trump himself favors: Believe me, he's in it to win....

Tell you what; I was listening to a liberal radio station tonight (KGO in SF, CA) and what I have been thinking and occasionally saying is coming to fruition. To wit:

The suburban white woman, the League of Women Voters housewife may very well be insulted by Trump’s gruff manner, and I heard that from a few women callers and even the hard-wired hostess. It sets a bad example for their children. All that anti-bullying rigamarole their kids go through in school. So the hostess asked if they would consider Trump and they all said they might. A month ago, Trump was out of the question. This is shifting.

But Hillary has Trumped that marker. It is not Republicans saying she’s crooked, the whole world saw it. And she ratified it and repeated it and she even lied about lying. And this is something they are having big trouble abiding. Lying as she has done, relentlessly, and taking the money she has from foreign sources (esp with BJC now saying the CF will stop taking money from foreign sources should she be elected...this is...what, a bribe to stop getting bribed...?) these women are having a harder and harder time accepting Hillary as time goes on.

It’s my belief that Trump is going to strip away 10-15-20% of hard wired Democrats and that goes for each and every motley fragment the Dems have managed to sticth together. He will gradually generate a substantial but sub rosa majority. I think he’s going to smoke her.

I’m predicting a win similar to the Reagan landslide.

I like his off-the-cuff speeches better than his teleprompter ones.

Sure, but you're already voting for him. The idea now is to persuade the undecided and swing voters. The teleprompter thing may bore you, but boring might be enough when he's running against a candidate as weak as Hillary.

Trump was NEVER a buffoon! #1 RULE of any successful campaign. “FIRST, Get their Attention!” That is what Donald did and now he is moving into the second phase of his campaign, “Get SERIOUS.”

Hey Vet, good to hear from you with really excellent news.

This week, the week of the Trumpoprompter, will be the week that turned the message on.

Full speed ahead, no distractions, take no prisoners.

Any so called pubbie that is still a "NoTrumper" like kristol, goldberg or will, can ESAD, and we will remember who they are.

Go Trump.

I think Hillary Clinton's inability to visit those disaster victims--and a picture posted on Twitter showing Hillary sitting close to President Obama at a birthday party for Bill Clinton in Martha's Vineyard--did tremendous damage to the Hillary Clinton campaign. It might as well been the same as the images of Michael Dukakis riding a tank or John F. Kerry in that "bunny suit" at the Space Shuttle launch complex.

By letting the IQ win this week by using the teleprompter, staying focused, and “acting Presidential”, he has now seen that he can do this and draw in more support while still “being Trump”. Kellyanne Conway will be travelling with him and I think she’s the kind of personality who can give him good feedback that will be accepted, just as his family does.

Yep - and he does this as he chooses another campaign manager who has her head set on right and probably insisted he modify some of his "non-politic" tendencies.

Plenty of time to become fully himself again while in the WH....

He really seems to have found the "sweet spot". He's still Trump, but he has adjusted, and even though he's adjusted, he's still on offense, he can still counterpunch. Great work by the Donald.

Its not about substance, it’s about capturing the narrative.

You are correct.

Of course, how many among the unconverted are hearing his message, given the media’s twisting of everything he says?

I certainly hope that his people are saturating the non-mainstream media with his real message.

The media is completely censoring any positive Trump news. ALL of it. These speeches, the LA visit, his appeal to Blacks. NONE of it covered. Total blackout. I’ve never seen it like this in my life. Is his message getting to the people at ALL?

This: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3461297/posts

Trump is going to peel off “some fraction” of assumed-Dem voters from each and every one of the splintered, motley list of frickin’ weirdo disaffecteds. He is not going to drive a truck through these groups, just peel off say 15%.

Some pctage of Bernie voters are crazed eye-bleeding livid at the DNC and Wasserman, and I heard this in the lib callers I heard. I am talking borderline insanely unhinged. I think some of these have undergone some form of shock therapy and may consider Trump, but I suspect few would vote for HRC.

Some pctage of “gay issue voters” (whom in many cases are very non-stupid) are not going to be able put “Orlando” and “wonderful Muslims” and “shooters father in HRCs VIP club” together in their minds.

Some Blacks are going to start listening to this new theme of Trumps of calling out the Dem partty for taking their votes for granted while doing nothing, zero, in fact less than zero for Blacks. He has to pound this one.

I am trying not to (over)believe my own BS.

Also, Bloomberg commentary on the “New Trump” (as of his several t-Prompter speeches of that last few days which have rec’d universal acclaim) has been “This is just doubling down on his hateful bigoted and xenophobic rhetoric and I think it will just keep getting worse and worse for women and minorities”.

Hahahaha, OK. You go, Mr. Halperin.

Repeating my core idea: The biggest effect (or recent events) is the great, again, always-assumed-to-be-Dem League of Women Voters suburban housewife who has at long last reached a level of disgust with HRCs astonishingly pervasive degree of vicious rotten lying and cannot abide it. This shift is gonna be very under the radar screen and IMO will be greater than my 15% number.

There is and has been no assertion in politics over the last 20+ years, possibly more, that has been as absolutely unequivocal than the display of blatant lying and total disrespect of the law shown and acted out by HRC. Do not tell me women do not know this. They can’t vote for that. EVERY ONE of those lib women callers I heard, they all mentioned this lying and how it troubled them. Why? Why would they mention that if they had every intention of voting for HRC?
