Donald Trump's planned Denver appearance shows he's getting serious about Colorado

Donald Trump is getting serious about Colorado.

After an abysmal showing at the state assembly - he didn't win a single pledged delegate to the Republican National Convention - Trump will be in Denver Friday for both his first public speech and his first private fundraiser in the Centennial State.

Trump is scheduled to talk at the Western Conservative Summit in the morning before attending a private fundraiser in the home of former Denver Broncos coach Mike Shanahan. The rumored $10,000 a couple lunch event is being co-hosted by Pete Coors and Larry Mizel.

For those unable or unwilling to drop the price of a nice used car to see Trump, tickets are available to the Western Conservative Summit - at $120 each - where Trump will be introduced by former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

Free events are also planned....

Then can you post the results of the GOP primary votes? The Dems had 123,000 vote in their primary with 59%. What were the GOP results??

Just like Trump’s campaign in the southern states that left everyone chuckling during primary season (until the votes were counted and he leapt ahead of everyone), I think Trump is willing to fight for every state. He doesn’t like losing and takes nothing for granted

Go Trump

Get out the vote

Last August when the national GOP said delegates had to be apportioned according to primary voting results, the Colorado GOP on auto-suck to Cruz cancelled the planned primary.

the Democrats actually got to vote here. The GOP did not.

Yes, the straw poll was cancelled, for whatever reason and something to do with NRC rules. It stunk. I felt like I wasted my time, and I raised hell with CO party people. I think we will get the primary vote back.

The Dems had 123,000 vote in their primary...

CO is a caucus state right now. What do you mean their "primary"?

Only 1% separation in the latest CO poll.

This is where there is a crazy disconnect between state level polls this close and national polls which keep touting Hillary’s “double digit” lead.

I have been writing for a while now that Colorado is very winnable for Trump. Colorado is an extreme Bernie state, not a Hillary state. Some of those Bernie supporters are limousine socialists, who won't vote Trump, but are not enthusiastic about Hillary at all. I have only seen two or three Hillary bumper stickers this whole election year. Colorado has a large number of independents, many of whom swung Bernie, but are now winnable for Trump. Recent events have probably helped Trump with these voters.

The southern part of the state is more old school union blue collar democrat, with a lot of latinos who have been here for generations. Trump can win this part of the state and peel them away from the democrats, if he goes to Pueblo, Colorado Springs, Alamosa, and competes for their votes.

“Yes, a straw poll at the caucuses.”

The national party said that the Colorado party could not conduct a straws poll and then ignore the results when assigning delegates.

That was the issue. Rather than take the straw poll or have an actual primary the Cruz supporters simply rigged the caucus and cancelled the poll. There was more support for Trump in the building than the results showed.

It may not have been an underhanded, dirty, sleazy or cheap trick but it certainly LOOKED like it was especially when a Cruz zombie in the state party tweeted “We did it!” shortly after the caucus had ended. This was where the “Trump’s too stupid to follow the rules” meme started and many Republicans that had previously had Ted Cruz as their second choice abandoned him completely.

Colorado was, paradoxically a last gasp for Ted Cruz because even though he “won” he came out looking like a slime-ball whether he was or not. The whole caucus in Colorado just reeked of dirty politics.

By using the word “caucus,” some Cruzers would like for people to think of real presidential caucuses like the ones in IA or NV, where people actually got to vote for their choice for the nominee of the party. That was not the case with CO, where the people only had a binding vote in caucuses for delegates to their local county convention. Then the delegates at that county convention, separate from regular voters, chose delegates to the state convention. Then those delegates independently chose whichever delegates to the national convention they personally preferred. Regular voters were a few steps removed from the vote that actually mattered.

The whole point of the convoluted way it was set up was to make it challenging for anyone who was not already involved in local party politics to participate in any meaningful way. Regular voters were definitely not the target audience for all these multiple stages of delegate selection of local Republican figures. They used to at least have a presidential straw poll too, as you mentioned, so the populace’s preferences for presidential nominee could be noted, but they cancelled that this time after Trump’s rise, because it might be too obvious how much the state convention was going against the wishes of the people.

Because people only got a chance to vote for very low-level local delegates instead of the presidential candidates, there is naturally no vote tally by candidate for the so-called Colorado caucuses. Every other state (except for ND, which likewise passed on a vote among the populace for the nominee) has vote totals from their caucus or primary. If CO had a real vote, then there would be a vote tally by presidential candidate for that state. CO does not and cannot have one, since they never had a vote. That’s also why the CO “caucuses” got next to no national coverage on Super Tuesday. Why would the press cover a bunch of little local elections at the CO “caucuses” when they had real elections for the presidential nominee to cover in many other states?
