Trump: I’m open to Cruz as VP
The Hill's Ballot Box Blog ^ | May 4, 2016 | Mark Hensch

Donald Trump on Wednesday said that he would consider making Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) his running mate.

“I respect Ted,” he told host Bill O’Reilly on Fox News’ “The O’Reilly Factor." "He was a very strong competitor. He really competed hard and tough."

“He’s certainly a capable guy,” the presumptive GOP presidential nominee added. "It’s something we can think about.” Trump defeated Cruz in Tuesday’s Indiana GOP presidential primary, making him the presumptive nominee.

Cruz suspended his Oval Office bid shortly afterward, saying that his results in the Hoosier State “foreclose” his path to the Republican presidential nomination.

Trump on Wednesday said that he does not resent Cruz for their often bitter contest against each another.

“It’s an easy thing,” he said of the nominating process. "He said some things and he made some things up and he took some things that were said out of context.”

Reports emerged earlier on Wednesday that retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson would serve on a selection committee for finding Trump’s running mate.

Carson, another former GOP presidential candidate, will help Trump make his pick before the Republican National Convention in Cleveland in July.

Trump on Wednesday said that Carson’s involvement stems from his reluctance in becoming the vice presidential nominee himself.

“I don’t think Ben’s looking at that,” he said. "He’s a friend of mine. He’s been so helpful. He’s a terrific guy.”

Trump additionally reiterated that he is also eyeing Gov. John Kasich (R-Ohio), who suspended his White House run earlier Wednesday.

“I would certainly consider him,” he said. "During the debates I’d always find myself talking to John. I’ve had a good relationship with him, so we’ll see how that turns out.

“I don’t want to talk too much about it as I am considering a couple of people. We do have a lot of candidates who would be very, very good."

I said it on a previous post, you want a VEEP that will prevent a DT “health emergency” or mitigate an impeachment by either party. Cruz would do that and bring many of his voters back into the fold. Personally, I say cut a deal w Cruz, VP, after election is won, Cruz resigns from VEEP, and is nominated for SCOTUS. DT then backfills VP with a Jim DeMint, General McCrystal, Colonel West — Someone young, engaging, intelligent that may run for prez in 2020 because I think DT may have his fill of politics after 4 years. DT could do a JFK by taking McConnell as VP to get him out of Senate Mag Ldr, that’s why JFK chose LBJ as VP. But with McConnell, the “health emergency” gambit is in play.

Trump obviously sounds like a fighter who won the fight, but once the fight is over, it's shake hands and compliment your opponents for honoring the ring with their best efforts, and then it's back to normal.

Nothin' personal, just business.

That being said, if Trump picks one of his primary opponents for VP I'll be surprised, especially Cruz or Kasich.

Cruz is no longer an unknown quantity with a perceived high value as he was before the race began, same for that crazy dude from Ohio.

Speaking of Ohio politicians...did Ohio ever clean up the Cuyahoga River back in the day after it was no longer flammable?

The reason I ask is that Boehner and Kasich probably grew up drinking that Ohio water, right? And I'm wondering if there is a connection.

After listening to Kasich this election season and watching Boehner in action these last few, maybe America's health could be improved with non-GMO, all organic, free-range politicians for a change?

This better living through chemicals thing we've been using to yank the food chain and grow the world with has produced some toxic politics needing a Superfund level cleaning.

Only things is trump doesn’t deny anybody is off the list when asked. I cant think of one.

Ted’s as good a pick as any. If you go for the person who ran in the primary and picked up the second most votes.

Trump’s not going to pick Cruz, IMO. I don’t think he picks any of the losers for VP. Trump’s not going to heed establishment advice either!

Vote Trump 2016!!!

The NBC argument is not nearly so important to me as the status of the father.

The serviceman abroad is a patriotic US citizen father. I’m ok with that. He’s serving his country. Even that would depend, though, on the military Japanese spouse...if she kept insisting on another tour in Japan. That child would be tied to Japan.

Cruz’s dad INTENTIONALLY did NOT pursue US citizenship, but went to Canada in 1969 at the height of Vietnam protests and immediately sought Canadian citizenship. Rafael Sr was NOT in my book a patriotic American father. He’s a Cubo-Canadian father who pissed on a chance to pursue US citizenship. I don’t care what the lawyers say about NBC. That RUBS me the wrong way.

Trump cozying up to Cruz & saying he will take PAC money in the general election. Is there anything Trump will not reverse himself on?

I think Trump shot himself on that deal. Hard to pick a guy you eviscerated and called a liar for 4 months.

I think one has to listen to Trump’s victory speech from Tuesday evening. He had nice things to say about Ted but he began them with: I don’t know how Ted feels about me....translation, Cruz never congratulated him on his win and in fact had not spoken to him. I think any joint venture with Cruz is dead in the water as the riff is too large.

Does he try to put him on the SC? Depends on the makeup of any new senate. Cruz has many enemies up there in the GOP and he would NEVER get past the Dems.

Rubio is another matter. He could get the VP slot but his being coy about not supporting anyone till they won the nomination rather than going with Trump immediately could hurt him. He better find something as he is getting squeezed out of Florida.

Gay Sick, perish the thought he ends up anywhere in DC except in some looney bin. The guy is wrong on every issue.

In the end he will need someone who can relate to Congress, be a woman/minority and bring some help in a swing state. Few fit that bill.

Trump is baiting Ted ...” You can’t fish for someone who isn’t interested in your bait. Cruz has no interest in anything Trump related. When Cruz said Trump was a pathological liar and narcissist he meant it. Cruz actually believes in good character in politics.

“I don’t know how Ted feels about me”

I’d be surprised if Ted feels really good about trump. I mean, he did drag Ted’s wife through the mud as well as Ted’s dad (based on a National Enquirer story).
And of course, again, there is the “Lying Ted” and Birther mess.... You can say it’s just politics but this was mud slinging taken to a totally different level.

Trump seems to be learning fast. He won’t take Cruz. But he won’t bitch slap him either. But by saying he’d consider Cruz it would make Cruz look very bad if he keeps badmouthing Trump. And Cruz needs some good PR.

I hear you. :)

The only reason I brought the other up was because of the NEW birth certificate - the certificate of live birth abroad from the consulate becoming the legal birth certificate. It is what the writer had to show whenever a birth certificate was needed (passport, social security, etc.) And the baby became a naturalized citizen, not a NBC.

I know one Texan who will vote for Trump. Also voted for Cruz. Won’t do that again. Well, I won’t say “never”. If he’s running for re-election against an establishment prick like last time then I’d vote against Cruz’s opponent.
