The Wall Street Journal ^ | April 12, 2016 | Fred Barnes

Posted on 04/13/2016 1:18:29 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Newt Gingrich has been a friend of Donald Trump’s for the past decade. He hasn’t endorsed Mr. Trump’s presidential bid, but they talk frequently. Mr. Trump is anti-left wing and anti-political correctness, Mr. Gingrich says, while acknowledging this: Mr. Trump is not a conservative....

Conservatives have always been on both sides of the tariff issue. As a Jeffersonian, in the past, I have always been for low tariffs for economic reasons. But as a true Conservative, who as a true Conservative is morally obligated to consider the social effects of policy on his own community; that very Conservatism now forces me to adjust that past opinion.

Treating trade policy as some sort of absolute, to the point where it interferes with patriotic duty to your fellow countrymen is not Conservative--not in the least.

Donald Trump on the other hand, is an instinctive Conservative, finally waking up to a crisis that too many long time Conservative activists have been misled to ignore.

Trump: Metaphor For American Conservatism.

Communities all across America need what Donald has to offer.

I think your point is well and reasonably stated.

I don’t really understand why people have the confidence they do about what Trump will do.

There is no meaningful record.

i do think what he has said in the past 6 months has largely fit what you are saying but I know that is not good enough for me.

Trump is a trumpist, i.e whatsoever is good for Trump. He doesn’t care a wit about anyone else. If you benefit by something he does to help himself fine. If you are hurt by something he does to help himself that is also fine because that makes you a loser.

Yeah, so? None of the other candidates are any different. You say that as if it ONLY applied to Trump, as if it was some kind of revelation...when it is just simple human nature.

Yep. But I am conservative. And Ted Cruz is. That’s why I’m supporting Ted Cruz.

Probably all the conservatives who support free trade.’

Conveniently disregarding the fact that we surrender sovereignty and most of all, our borders would be more wide open than they are today.

“Ted Cruz is toast, as has been observed on this site.”

Yeah. You and many other Cruz haters have been saying that since before Iowa. Has not helped your candidate even one iota.

If Trump and his supporters had simply argued why his candidacy was superior, rather than engaging in juvenile antics, he would have already had more than 1237 delegates.

Trump got bad advice on this. Taunting and mocking the media worked. Taunting and mocking every other candidate weakened him. His supporters followed suit.

Cruz has a large number (millions) of die hard supporters. He has the best conservative ratings from every conservative organization. Maligning him has been a foolish tactic.

Trump could have easily upstaged him on managerial experience, business and finance experience, negotiating experience, and drilled home that Cruz is a junior senator that has no bills and needs more time to season.

Instead, he and his supporters have accentuated the difference being that Trump is not so conservative. Trump is running on a conservative platform. He knows he need a conservative core. His supporters seem to think the conservative vote is unimportant.

The reality is that Trump can win the nomination and lose the general if he does not unite the base and bring over the Cruz supporters.

And if Trump and his supporters remain off message, they just may hand the nomination to Cruz.

Trump’s plan to win conservative support:

1) Oppose illegal immigration

2) Review our legal immigration policies

3) Support a pro-America trade policy

4) Oppose globalism

People who don’t support him on these aren’t really conservatives in any meaningful sense of the term.

Mr. Trump is anti-left wing

LOL! Single payer healthcare. Kelo. 'Moving the gay agenda forward.' Letting Perez Hilton run wild. Amnesty. If here any more 'anti=left wing' he'd be Lenin.

////Ted Cruz is toast, as has been observed on this site.

Most all Cruz supporters have left FR and if acknowledged by Trump supporters it is either 1) we are stupid, 2) look at the source! Only Trumpbart, Gateway Pundit and unknown blogs can be believed or 3) Cruz is the spawn of satan and Donald is Lord and Savior of us all.

There is no way Trump can change minds after everyone he has trashed. His bed is made. Cruz wins on the second ballot with Rubio’s delegates.

Trump is by far more conservative than Cruz... Trump is eligible to hold the office of president. No conservative would ever go against ‘Original Intent’ of the Constitution... Just ask Mitch the Senate!!!

Actually, all you get with Cruz is President Hillary Clinton.

The GOPe is using Cruz to try to deny Trump the R nomination. But they don’t want Cruz either.

Cruz is either so naïve he can’t see that, or he willingly sold out to the GOPe, for some promises.

Which should be just about everyone because free trade is a conservative value.

"In general, the protective system of our day is conservative, while the free trade system is destructive. It breaks up old nationalities and pushes the antagonism of the proletariat and the bourgeoisie to the extreme point. In a word, the free trade system hastens the social revolution. It is in this revolutionary sense alone, gentlemen, that I vote in favor of free trade.”

— Karl Marx before the Democratic Association of Brussels January 9, 1848

“Mr. Gingrich says ... Mr. Trump is not a conservative....”

I saw Newt speak a couple of weeks back, and that is essentially what Newt said at that time. Trump does not have a political ideology as such, so if you have a list of conservative agenda items you would like to see a candidate tackle, it could be very hit or miss if we end up with Trump (i.e., several unpleasant surprises).
