Why Ted Cruz’s Facial Expression Makes Me Uneasy
Psychology Today ^ | Posted Jan 01, 2016 | Richard E. Cytowic M.D

He’s a brilliant orator with a sharp legal mind. But his expression unsettles me. I know my reaction is visceral and automatic, but as a neurologist it is my business to notice things out of the ordinary and probe them. The Senator’s atypical expressions leave me uneasy.

Skill in reading faces is so fundamental to our species that 54 facial muscles orchestrate its endless nuances, which others read like a book just as we read them. Only some of these many facial muscles are under voluntary control, which is one reason it is so hard to maintain a poker face or counterfeit a smile.

Downturned expressions usually signal disagreeableness or disgust. But I honestly don’t know because such an expression is rare in the context of public presentations that are meant to win people over. He may well be unaware that the message of his body language is incongruent with his words.

Fair enough, but I still think it is psycho-babble.

Ted Cruz appears to be a very smart guy, but outside of his true believers there are a lot of people probably a majority who feel uncomfortable when they see him speak. He just comes across creepy... this is one of the more charitable explanation as to why.

I grew up with livestock. When I was three a horse kicked me in the back of the head and sent me unconscious to the hospital. If I lose my hair, people are probably going to point because over half a century later I still have a significant indentation in the back of my head. Everyone else in my family had very good hand to eye coordination. Not me, I was never very good at playing games with balls. I excelled at endurance sports such as swimming, running and bicycle racing winning state championships and competing at the national level, but no one ever wanted me on their baseball or basketball team.

Who knows maybe Ted had some type of unfortunate accident like what happened to me when he was a kid playing up in Alberta. Maybe that creepy unsettled feeling that Ted Cruz gives a lot of people is just the result of an unfortunate accident and not a sign that he is an untrustworthy, unsociable, sneaky, megalomaniac politician. Stranger things have happened.

Jimma Carta says he’s so malleable

Conservatives used to say that Jimmy Carter had no credibility, now he suddenly is very credible to Cruz fans. Seems to me that the real hypocrites and those who lack credibility are those who suddenly find credence in what Jimmy Carter says. That's you.

“Presidential is cheating, evemn from a gou who doesn’t roll his eyes.”

Presidential is endlessly crying on Twitter when you don’t get your way. Then coming out the next day saying you like the guy you accused of cheating the day before.

What accident was that? Seems it would be on record somewhere.

You guys made me have to search for old Carter pictures, and his eyes don’t crinkle in most of them. Hmmmm

BTW... I was in elementary school when Carter ran for prez. Even as a kid, I knew that he would be terrible. I remember the ominous feeling I had when he won our class straw poll and even worse when he won the election. I knew it would be bad, and it was. Never understood why no one else could see it.

No Psychology Today giving me advice! No group of frauds who moved homosexuality from a disorder to normal and now close to doing the same about pediophilia being normal, just because as a bunch of perverts into the normal category have any basis for making judgements to me!

I remember when the 8pm-er on FoxNews (BOR) used to have a facial expression “expert” on and they’d view videos.

Dumbest segments ever. Eventually he dropped it.

Cruz is not a natural, Bush and Bill Clinton are.
Cruz is using his mind to give him what his body hasn’t.

If smiling was important to me, I'd vote for Jimmy Carter. :-)

That's just the point -- he won, and the grinning demon Zero won twice. It's sad, but in a telegenic age, the low-infos do go by looks.

That’s not phrenology - that is the ridiculous system of reading bumps on the head.

Cruz has a weird face there’s no doubt about it. But it’s unctuous, Uriah-Heep qualities that bother me.

People who listened on the radio to the Nixon-Kennedy debate thought Nixon won. Those who watched on TV thought Kennedy won.

I was excited to be picked as my city’s official greeter when Nixon came to town. Then I met him. Damp limp handshake, sweaty brow, no eye contact. He was ill at ease with an 11 year old! I still supported him for being Ike’s VP, but there was a creepy vibe.

I support Cruz because of his long-time support for the Constitution but he’ll have to overcome his lack of visual appeal.

Yeah, you’re talking about the way someone looks. Just like Obama supporters did.

I come from a family of Yankees - my mom always said that Southern libs were worse than Northeastern libs. She hated Carter too.

Sadly, it doesn’t matter what Cruz is thinking. He is off-putting and can do nothing about it. I have posted this since the beginning. But look at Rubio, the true amnesty king. He comes off fine when his real character is otherwise. Not much can be done about it.

Trump has a higher IQ than Teddy. People ignore that. They think because Ted could cite Green Eggs and Ham on the Senate floor and James Carvelle was impressed, that must make him more brilliant than others. LOL
