Donald Trump Comes Out Of Iowa Looking Like Pat Buchanan
FiveThirtyEight ^ | February 2, 2016 | Nate Silver

On Monday, Iowa voters did something that Republican "party elites" had failed to do for more than seven months: They rejected Donald Trump.

Trump received 24 percent of the vote in the Iowa caucuses, placing him closer to the third-place candidate, Marco Rubio (23 percent), than to the winner, Ted Cruz (28 percent). Trump underperformed his polls, which had him winning Iowa with 29 percent of the vote, while Cruz and Rubio outperformed theirs.

It's not uncommon for the polls to be off in Iowa and other early-voting states, but the manner in which Trump underachieved is revealing. It turns out that few late-deciding voters went for him. According to entrance polls in Iowa, Trump won 39 percent of the vote among Iowans who decided on their candidate more than a month ago. But he took just 13 percent of voters who had decided in the last few days, with Rubio instead winning the plurality of those voters....

5000 votes and all this?

Gee whiz. He got 7 delegates to Cruz’s 8.

Move on.

But Trump’s platform of America first was always similar to Buchanan. History shows Buchanan was right. NAFTA destroyed millions of middle class jobs. Now we buy crap from China.

Wait, didn’t Trump come in second, ending up with one less delegate than Cruz? How is that being taken out? And, I still can’t help but wonder if there were not some irregularities of some sort, given the polling data!

Trump just can’t finish. He is all talk and no bite. Just watch his NH “lead” drop as both Cruz and Roobio carve him off.

Trump has been around 24% since the start. You would think with all of noise, he would be much higher.

He will do okay in NH, but I am willing to bet Rubio and Kasich come in the top 3.

Consider Nates bunch got everything wrong yesterday, I would think they would want to step back from their habitual pomposity.

Trump does indeed have Buchanan’s plan. We must raise taxes on ourselves to save jobs.

That’s their establishment RINO job...to split votes off of Trump....I pray neither one are successful. Our time is quickly running out, for Trump to turn this sinking ship around.

All other career politicians are merely changing chairs on the deck.

Hi 2DV! You were right about the Cruz ground game in IA. I know you caught some flak for suggesting that the polls were not a big deal and that the ground game that Cruz team built up was key.

China is kicking our ass.

Mexico is stealing our jobs AND sending their criminals and low skilled laborers here.

Parts of America look post apocalyptic.

That the America you wanted ?

Buchanan was right and is right.

In other words: He’s totally right, but if even if he’s wrong, it’s not his bad.

Update: The backtrack continues…

You have to revisit your assumptions…I’m now much less skeptical of Trump’s chances of becoming the nominee.

The only question is how high you want those taxes to be, in order to ensure our prosperity.

Rubio is going to take out Cruz. I really believe that and then we will have Trump and Rubio fighting it out. Cruz is not a positive person at all and he proved it with that depressing mess of a coronation he did last night.

By rejection is meant, they gave Trump 7 delegates to Cruz' 8, after months of intense ground game by Cruz, and almost no ground game by Trump, in a state where Trump was picked to come in tenth or so, out of 17 candidates.

I lived in Iowa from 1974 to 2002 except for my time in the service and helped on the Haig and Forbes campaigns, as well as for the Polk County GOP. I was with the unemployment office helping veterans and aid recipients find work.

...bet Rubio and Kasich come in the top 3.

The only way that happens is if Trump drops to fourth. Cruz is already in second in New Hampshire and i don't think he has negative momentum coming out of Iowa, do you?
