Donald Trump and Ted Cruz: second coming of Barry Goldwater?
The Christian Science Monitor ^ | December 4, 2015 | Linda Feldmann

Some Republicans worry that if Donald Trump or Ted Cruz wins the nomination, the party will be crushed, as Barry Goldwater was in 1964. But times have changed.

Washington — When Ted Cruz announced for president in March, many a pundit wondered out loud if he could be the next Barry Goldwater.

That is, could the hard-edged conservative Senator Cruz – like the late Senator Goldwater in 1964 – win the Republican presidential nomination, only to get crushed in the general election? With Cruz surging in the polls, second only to Donald Trump in the latest CNN poll of Republican voters, the question has added relevance.

Mr. Trump, too, has invited Goldwater comparisons of late, as he strengthens his lead atop the Republican field. Trump is a less apt analogy; he’s more populist than conservative, and his appeal is based more on his outsize persona rather than ideology. But the basic outline is the same: that the GOP could nominate someone unacceptable to moderates and swing voters, and the party gets crushed not only in the presidential race, but also in a lot of down-ballot races....

Abraham Lincoln would've lost to LBJ in 1964.

Once JFK was killed, LBJ was unbeatable.

Goldwater and JFK were planning a different kind of race. They even talked about doing a whistle-stop tour together. At one stop, President Kennedy would come out and talk about an issue and Senator Goldwater would rebut him. At the next stop, they’d reverse it.

No. Goldwater didn’t connect with the common man and he kept saying stupid things like “extremism...is no vice” actually acquiescing to the Loony Left’s depiction of him and handing over the debate on a silver platter. Trump’s smarter than that.

Cruz is Goldwater, the modern day epitome of conservatism.

There may be someone better out there, but I don’t know who.

Cruz is a strong cup of conservative coffee.

Whether America can ever elect a conservative again is a good question. But if we cannot in 2016, we never will again. People hate 0bama. People do not trust Hillary.

At this moment in history, we should take our chance on the most conservative guy in the room: Cruz.

...In each debate either Douglas or Lincoln would open with an hour address. The other would then speak for an hour and a half. The first then had 30 minutes of rebuttal. In the seven debates, Douglas, as the incumbent, was allowed to go first four times...

Wanna see the Republican party crushed and destroyed? Force Jeb down our throats. Jeb is the next Dole, the next McCain and the next Romney, all crammed into a single RINO skin...

Warnin’ ya, GOPe. You do it, you’re toast.

Just sayin’...

Ted Cruz is more of a combo of Coolidge and Reagan. (and will continue to be after he’s elected)

“Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice,” he said. “And…moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue.”

I forgot that was his quote.

I agree! Cruz is my first pick also, but if Trump keeps polling high and wins the nomination, I hope he picks Cruz as a running mate - and I hope Cruz would accept it. I personally think we would win in a landslide with those two. Trump would so up the libertarians, the populists and the disaffected democrats that also hate Obama. Cruz would ensure the social conservatives and maybe any Jewish Republicans (thought Trump is not really helping in that area after his stupid statement to them). It’s not my first choice, but the way things seem to be trending it might wind up being the hated “lesser of two evils” for we conservatives. Not much longer till we see what happens in Iowa. If Cruz could win there it would really shake things up.

If the GOP nominee is NOT Trump or Cruz, the party will be crushed.

Into dust.

Jeb Bush: second coming of Bob Dole/John McCain/Mitt Romney?
Chris Christie: second coming of Bob Dole/John McCain/Mitt Romney?
Marco Rubio: second coming of Bob Dole/John McCain/Mitt Romney?
John Kasich: second coming of Bob Dole/John McCain/Mitt Romney?

Two can play at this game.

... and his appeal is based more on his outsize persona rather than ideology.

Am calling BS on the author.

She apparently has no idea the most men and most clear thinking women understand there is a time, most certainly when faced with evil, that a man should "stand up".

The evil in this case is a political boa constrictor, appearing in the form of a liberal agenda and political correctness together with an effeminate non-responsive political opposition (GOP), that that is slowly extinguishing our traditional and constitutional freedoms.

Trumps appeal is based on the fact he appears willing to "stand up", while most of the others appear willing to compromise and remain seated to a large extent.

Now, now, now, haven’t we discussed this before. The man who can WIN is TRUMP. It is too early for Cruz. He needs some seasoning. :>)

We’ll see.

If Trump wins, I’ll support him.

I trust you can do the same for Cruz.
