John Kasich on Social Security cuts: 'Get over it'

Exeter, New Hampshire (CNN)—Ohio Gov. John Kasich said Friday that a New Hampshire audience member would "get over" cuts to Social Security payments as a result of his reform plan -- and the left is already pouncing on the comment.

The Republican presidential candidate was asked about entitlement reform during NH1's "Fiscal Fridays" series in Concord, New Hampshire, on Friday, and he said it was something that would have to get done.

"We can't balance a budget without entitlement reform. What are we, kidding?" Kasich said when asked about his opponents who say they won't touch entitlements.

Kasich said he was part of the effort to reform Medicare and Medicaid in the '90s, and that he also had a plan to change Social Security so that initial benefits were lowered for individuals not yet near eligibility.

He asked audience members to raise their hands if they were far from receiving Social Security, asked them if they knew yet what their initial benefit would be and then asked them if they would be bothered if it were a little lower for the good of the country.

One person said it would be a problem.

"Well, you'd get over it, and you're going to have to get over it," Kasich joked....

It occurs to me that he should soak himself with gasoline and start playing with matches. It will hurt less and not last as long as the World telling him to f—k off for the rest of his life.

The only entitlement reform needed is with the entitled class known as Congress.

Last time I checked a few years ago, SSI and SSDI were over 1/4 of the total payments from SSA.

SSI (Supplemental Security Income) comes out of the general fund and not SSA funds, but SSA handles them and makes the payments. SSI is for individuals who do not qualify for SS because they haven’t worked, or worked enough. Many minors are on SSI because their single-parents filed for them as a hardship; also a lot of marginally employed younger adults.

SSDI - Disability is for people who have worked enough quarters to qualify under SS, and that level has been steadily increasing the last 10 years - I’d say more than the 25% I saw years ago. More unemployed people, more disability lawyers, more court actions to get on it. Just watch daytime TV once and you’ll get the picture (especially during Maury and Jerry).

I went to get a replacement SS card about 10 years ago. I had to go into the Marietta SS office and wait all day. Most of the people I saw were old foreigners whose children brought them here from the “old country”, young unemployable adults (SSDIs and SSIs), and young mothers with children (SSIs)..... out of the whole room of about 100 people, there were one or two like me, not looking for something early.

No, Social Security Is not a contract.

Look up the 1960 Nestor ruling. If a recipient had a right to SS, their heirs would receive their remaining funds at their death. SS is whatever .gov decides to give you.

It doesn’t matter what you consider it, it is what it is, an entitlement. It is the very definition of an entitlement, which means that if you are alive, you qualify. If you, God willing, live into your 80’s, you will receive more than you paid in. You will get back what you paid in very quickly after the age of 65, then the rest of us are on the hook.

Social Security is where the rubber hits the road. The Federal Budget will soon be solely interest on the debt, and entitlements (SS and Medicaire). Entitlements separate the true conservatives from the poseurs. The poseurs are the ones who beat their chests about how conservative they are, until their own bit of the government gravy train is effected, then their true New Deal self comes to the surface. It is the old “Cut goverment spending, hands of my Social Security” meme.

Here’s an idea, how about we pay it back? We have records of every penny that went into SS from it’s creation.

If a recipient had a right to SS, their heirs would receive their remaining funds at their death.

That's true for a savings account, but not things like pensions. You have a property right in pension or annuity payments, but your heirs get nothing.

Nestor did rule that there are no property rights in SS, but the basis was that in the SS law, the gov't reserved the right to change the benefit schedule.

That doesn't seem to include SS, since you need to have worked and paid in for 10 years to get it, and the payout depends on the pay-in.

Social Security is only screwed up because:

1) It is a ponzi or pyrmid scheme

2) It is in the hands of the govt

3) It is seen as an Entitlement.

4) It is a Pool of money rather than a specific account with your name on it

5) It is govt money rather than a oersonal asset.

6) There is NO SocSec lockbox/account/pool.

Since there are only two types of transfer payments, entitlements and welfare, logic dictates it is an entitlement. However, if you disagree, I will gladly defer and call it welfare if you like.

Social Security is not an entitlement, it is a contract, we have all been paying into it since we started working.

Exactly. I've 'donated' a couple hundred grand to SS and I expect a return.
I didn't have the choice to opt-out and surely would have had the option been there.

If the idea of giving money out and losing it was the plan I could have hired Bernie Madoff.

If you want to remain pure in your stance, make sure to drop dead in your late seventies, thus you will not collect from the rest of us. A couple hundred grand does not last long in retirement. I calculate you got 11 years on you, then the tab becomes ours.
