Donald Trump is surging in GOP presidential polls ahead of next week’s first Republican debate among the party’s presidential candidates, but the controversial businessman finished third in a sampling of conservative activists, according to a survey released Saturday by the St. Louis Tea Party Coalition.

In email polling of 122 coalition members conducted July 26 through July 29, Texas Senator Ted Cruz came in first at 29 percent, followed by Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker at 27 percent, with Trump at 19 percent. The rest of the crowded GOP field finished in single digits. You can see the entire poll here.

The poll also asked respondents who they would support if their first choice was not on the ballot. Governor Walker finished first at 28 percent and Senator Cruz at 19 percent

In the growing field of candidates for Missouri Governor, Lt. Governor Peter Kinder topped the field at 42 percent, followed by NAVY Seal Eric Greitens and Businessman John Brunner, who both had 24 percent support.

The entire poll had a margin of error of 8 percent.

I’m seeing a few internal polls and chuckling at all the negative knuckleheads. LOL And let’s not even talk about the debates.

Your point? I’ve seen smaller samplings posted here, and I imagine you have too. These are “activists” so that their opinion is probably shared by thousands of others who are busy living their lives, like most people.

Cruz got the dough, he’s good to go.

I see the finalists as Bush, Cruz, and Trump.

I think if Hillary remains essentially unopposed for the D, Bush becomes pretty much a lock for the R. Dems will orchestrate a big Op Chaos to push him thru. Bush is the obvious opponent Dems would love.

This is not very reflective of the “tea party”. Maybe of this small group in Kansas. Other polls people have noted here on FR and elsewhere put Trump with 1/3 or more and having plurality. Tea party is too fractured to be meaningful this way. Better to ask everyone who self-describes themselves as tea party.

Trump has been doing better with the more moderate wing of the party. Conservatives still don’t trust him...but they will, and soon.

The race should come down to Cruz and Trump. Personally I see no valid reason for any of the others to be there due to their GOPe ties. Yes, that includes Walker (his staff especially). The rest are there for the money, which only proves what they really are.

122 Tea Party members does not a poll make.

Not at all. I don’t think there’s any love between the Bushes and Trump.

I believe Trump is in it to win it.

If Hillary gets bogged down in some primary contests and the Dems can’t cross over for Bush, I think Bush is toast. But this only happens if the Chicago Mob greenlights somebody to take her on.

Not really surprising. A lot of Trump’s support doesn’t come from hard-core conservative activists at this point, but from more casual, Reagan Democrat types.

Well, we are hosting Ted Cruz in Columbus, GA next Saturday, and were originally planning on 200 paid attendees (includes bar-b-q buffet). We have sold all 250 tickets and are expanding to 350. These people will mostly be voting for Cruz.
