Usually, by the time Texas voters get to the presidential dance, the music has stopped playing.
With a couple of exceptions, Democrats and Republicans pick their nominees based on the results of elections in early contest states like Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. Texas is the after-party that all the cool folks skip.
Next year promises to be different.
Texas holds its 2016 primary election on March 1, part of a Super Tuesday grab bag thats also been dubbed the SEC primary, a nod to states with schools that compete athletically in the Southeastern Conference.
With the field of Republican candidates at 14 and growing, its unlikely that one candidate will emerge from the pack and secure the nomination before March 1. That means the Texas GOP primary could well be a critical contest, with its huge bounty of delegates shaping the race for the White House.
Its hard to imagine someone wrapping up the GOP nomination after just four states, the number with contests preceding March 1, said Nathan Gonzales, editor of the Washington-based Rothenberg & Gonzales Political Report.

‘Bout time! Texas has too many citizens to have been ignored for so long.
I suspect the pack will thin out pretty quickly. Rubio appears to be toast and many others have been struck with Trumphobia. Pretty quickly it will narrow down to Bush, Trump, Walker and one or two social conservatives by the end of March is my prediction.
Bush, Trump, Walker and Cruz.
Good for Texas. Just across the state line, here in New Mexico, by the time the primary rolls around, the candidate has already been chosen. Then in the general, it’s a choice between a douche and a crap sandwich. Maybe Texas can help change that this year.
“Gonzales Report”
Something tells me Trump won’t do too well in his write-ups.
Tend to agree with you but keep an eye on Perry too. Rubio’s people in Florida are at the jumping of the cliff stage. My info is that his offices have been getting a lot of flak over his trade bill cave in.
I believe your four - Bush Walker Trump Cruz will be the remaining ones.
I hope hope hope walker doesn’t try to latch onto bush.
> Bush, Trump, Walker and Cruz.
It kind of perplexes me as to what people see in Bush. It must be the moderate reflex for people who are only comfortable with soft marshmallow like political positioning.
Yea Gromers.
I suspect the pack will thin out pretty quickly.

I agree it won’t take long but the pack is very large this time.
