‘Jews for Cruz’ PAC ordered to change name

Ted Cruz would have to authorize the PAC for it to use its name, the FEC ruled.

“Jews for Cruz” can be for just about anything but Cruz, the Federal Election Commission said, according to Time Magazine.

The Jews for Cruz PAC backs Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and his presidential bid, but Cruz has not authorized them to do so. Thus they must change their name, the FEC informed the PAC in a letter Monday.

FEC rules (see page four, here) say a political action committee must have a formal affiliation with a candidate in order to include the candidate’s name in its name.

Apparently the group has a penchant for rhymes. Time says its Twitter profile read: “Help us fight the Islamic and liberal assault on America and Israel. In your heart, you know we’re right. And in your guts, you know they’re nuts.”

That phrase no longer appears on the @JewsforCruz nor the @JewsforCruzPac profiles.

But I like “Guts and Nuts” as the PAC’s name.

“Confused...is it the FEC forcing the change, or the Cruz Campaign. If the latter, it is pretty dumb.”

The FEC is saying the name has to be approved by the candidate if the candidate’s name is in the title. That is good sense. If this were not the case, any group for anything could use the name of a candidate in their title. Such as, “Body Snatchers for Rubio”, “Undertakers for Carson”. Candidates should have control over the use of their name.

FEC has rules for PACs. A PAC is allowed to independently raise money and make independent expenditures for a candidate. FEC is telling them their paperwork is not complete if they claim to be independent.

A club printing t-shirts is not necessarily a PAC.

One of my politically connected friends is concerned with PAC's and Superpac's who claim to support candidates but really waste their money on consulting costs. He named the Draft Carson people specifically regarding that.

People who donated to this PAC may think the money is going to Cruz. It says it supports Cruz. It may or may not support Cruz (although it is making money off of him), but it isn't Cruz's official campaign.
