Better than endorsing Romney’s opponent in the general, I would posit.
I have lived in the South all my life, and you just don’t see the Confederate flag all that much except in places that commemorate the Civil War, etc. Now, I hope, you will see more of it, because, as every Southerner knows, the flag doesn’t symbolize racism; it symbolizes DEFIANCE - to tyranny.
It hardly matters what the “real” reason for starting civil war was. What ALWAYS matters in life is the RESULT. And the result of Union army winning was end of slavery in United States.
And it only cost Romney $36,000. Nicki’s a cheap date. :-)
I think you are probably correct. However you can not deny that many blacks feel differently about the confederate flag.
Have you noticed Hillary has a confederate flag problem from Arkansas? This move by gov. Haley puts Hillary in a jam.
“And the result of Union army winning was end of slavery in United States.”
...and the destruction of the united States. Typical liberal viewpoint that fixing one thing while destroying the host is perfectly acceptable.
Before the war, “The united States are...”
After the war, “The United States is...”
That was a cheap date alright. But I do have a question, for which you might know the answer. How many sitting GOP governors or senators in 2012 refused to endorse Romney? If no one actively opposed Romney, it is unfair to single out Nikki Haley for endorsing Romney. It was the thing to do for sake of unity. There was no point in fracturing the party and help Obama.
SC was only the third primary. Newt won SC handily in spite of Nicki. I’m not saying Newt is perfect but he would have done a helluva lot better in the general election than Romney.
“However you can not deny that many blacks feel differently about the confederate flag.”
Probably so, but only because the race pimps have convinced them to feel differently. I just heard a black guy on Hannity call in and state that very thing. He’s probably only seen pictures of one.
We Americans should be extremely proud to be the ONLY country on earth who shed a lot of blood with the end result slavery was abolished. No other nation has fought a war to end slavery, a disgusting form of human subjugating by other human beings. Actually world history is just the opposite. Other countries fought wars to subjugate other human beings. Classic example is the British Empire on which the sun never set with colonies all over the world.
I could’nt agree more about Newt. I was rooting for him in primaries. He had a bunch of negatives, but no one was better in dealing with gotcha questions than Newt in 2012.
The Union forces adopted as one of its objectives the ending of slavery. Pat Cleburne, one of the best of the Confederate commanders, openly argued that the best bet for the Confederacy to achieve its freedom was to end the institution. That would have done a lot to gain European support for the Confederacy and even increase it among southerners. Cleburne made his plea while Grant was stalled in Virginia and Sherman was having hard sledding in Northern George and Lincoln was in danger of losing the election. Imagine if Davis had announced that the South had decided on a plan of gradual emancipation of the blacks as a basis for a negotiated peace with the North, McClellans campaign would have been strengthened greatly.
The Confederate flag became a symbol of White Mans Government about a hundred years ago. Hard to shake that sort of thing.
If you mean the “Southern Boys” in the legislature, I don't know how they will vote.
But I think the “Southern Boys” on Main Street will walk away from the GOP if no one makes a serious attempt to defend the Confederate flag.
Re: “No other nation has fought a war to end slavery, a disgusting form of human subjugating by other human beings. Other countries fought wars to subjugate other human beings. Classic example is the British Empire on which the sun never set with colonies all over the world.”
Actually, the British Navy, acting alone, completely stopped the Atlantic Ocean slave trade by 1820.
And most of the West African slaves who were shipped to the New World were sold into slavery by their Black neighbors or by their Black slave master fathers.
And there might be a good reason that no other country fought a civil war to end slavery.
The military death toll by 1865 was 600,000 plus.
That is the 2015 USA equivalent of 6.5 million deaths.
The North could have purchased every slave in America and re-located them in the Free States for half the money they spent on the Civil War - with no deaths, and with the Southern economy undamaged.
Instead, the North, just like the South, did not want 4 million recently freed Black slaves wandering around their part of the country, either, so that was never an option.
Don’t tell me stories about the British. I grew up in a British colony. I saw first hand the subjugation of native population by the British. If the Germans had not decimated the will of British soldiers to continue more bloodshed in preserving the colonial rule, My country of birth would still be a British Colony. I can bet money you were never a part of native population ruled by the British colonialists. So, your opinions are not from FIRST HAND experience such as mine.
Well aren't you special.
She needs to “grow a pair” and defend freedom. The DIMocRATs are the party of slavery and racism and death. Stand up...don’t bend over and like it. Isn’t freedom worth defending???
Judging by what South Carolina has chosen to do, I dont see why you mean. Hardly special at all. They are the one going the extra mile.
It wasnt the will that was lacking, but the means. After the US ended Lendlease, the British lacked the financial means to keep her Empire.
South Carolina ran up the flag in 1962 to show her defiance of racial integration. Until then it was really the flag of Confederate veterans, the same honorable men memorialized at Arlington in 1915. But in 1948, it became Stroms flag, his cause which as the years went by became less and less that of the South as a whole, till he gave up on it himself. Maybe this atrocity is a blessing in disguise.
