Todd J. Gillman: Can Ted Cruz help GOP court Hispanic voters?
The Dallas Morning News ^ | May 2, 2015 | Todd J. Gillman

Can Republicans win the hearts and votes of Hispanics? Is Sen. Ted Cruz, son of a Cuban immigrant, a candidate who can make a breakthrough with that crucial segment of the electorate?

Texas, Cruz noted at a forum with the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, “is the only majority-minority state in the country that is solidly Republican.” And he added, “It’s not rocket science that if Republicans continue to get clobbered in the Hispanic community it won’t stay solidly Republican.”

Javier Palomarez, president and chief executive of the chamber, teed up the issue by noting that President Barack Obama won 72 percent of the Hispanic vote, and asserting that no future president will be elected without courting — and winning a substantial share of — that segment of the population.

Cruz said faith, family, patriotism and hard work are core values both for Hispanics and for Republicans....

No.

Just like any group some will lean Right and some will lean Left. There is no switching sides anymore.

TED CRUZ will garner enough Hispanic votes to put him over the top.

To be honest, I don’t think that will happen and don’t think he has much of a chance but ... time will tell. I think he has a small group of fervent supporters and won’t grow beyond that. What WILL help him is that there are so many running on the GOP side that a good plurality of voters can get you reasonably deep in the Primaries.

But Ted is a true Conservative and Latinos simply are not that Conservative and don’t vote Conservative. I am befuddled as to why to some extent, but time and time again the polls and their voting patterns prove that. And we just don’t live in a time in our lives where people switch sides anymore. It’s all about one thing and one thing only ... turnout.

[To be honest, I don’t think that will happen and don’t think he has much of a chance]

TED CRUZ is the most qualified candidate, and you know it.
Let the facts speak for themselves.

TED CRUZ - MORE THAN QUALIFIED TO BE POTUS - 2016
http://www.tedcruz.org/

Pretty impressive...
• Solicitor General of Texas from 2003 - May 2008, Cruz was the first Hispanic Solicitor General in Texas, the youngest Solicitor General in the entire country, not to mention the longest tenure in Texas history.
• Partner at the law firm Morgan, Lewis & Bockius, where he led the firm’s U.S. Supreme Court and national appellate litigation practice.
• Cruz has authored 80+ SCOTUS briefs and presented 40+ oral arguments before The Court
• Cruz served as a law clerk to Chief Justice William Rehnquist. Cruz was the first Hispanic ever to clerk for a Chief Justice of the United States
• Described as a ‘superb’ constitutional lawyer, the man’s considerable skills and laser-like focus were on display for all when he took oily reptile Eric Holder by the neck and made him
answer the damn question.
• In the landmark case of District of Columbia v. Heller, Cruz assembled a coalition of 31 states in defense of the principle that the 2nd Amendment guarantees an individual right to keep and bear arms.
• Cruz presented oral argument for the amici states in the companion case to Heller before the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
• In addition to his victory in Heller, Cruz has successfully defended the Ten Commandments monument on the Texas State Capitol grounds, the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance in public schools and the majority of the 2003 Texas redistricting plan. Cruz also successfully defended, in Medellin v. Texas, the State of Texas against an attempt by the International Court of Justice to re-open the criminal convictions of 51 murderers on death row throughout the United States.
• Director of the Office of Policy Planning at the Federal Trade Commission
• Domestic Policy Advisor to U.S. President George W. Bush on the 2000 Bush-Cheney campaign.
• Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Texas School of Law in Austin, where he taught U.S. Supreme Court litigation
• Ted Cruz is currently junior US Senator from Texas. In order to win the 2012 Republican nomination for the Senate seat vacated by Kay Bailey Hutchison, Cruz had to defeat Texas Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst -heavily favored/backed by the DC old-guard GOP- in the Republican primary runoff. In the event, TEA Party favorite Cruz crushed Dewhurst, 57-43%...
he then beat Democrat Paul Sadler in the general election by a similar margin, 56-41. Cruz is also endorsed by the Tea Party Movement and the Republican Liberty Caucus.
• AWARDS: “America’s Leading Lawyers for Business,” Chambers USA (2009 & 2010) “50 Most Influential Minority Lawyers in America,” National Law Journal (2008) “25 Greatest Texas Lawyers of the Past Quarter Century,” Texas Lawyer (2010) “20 Young Hispanic Americans on the Rise,” Newsweek (1999) Traphagen Distinguished Alumnus, Harvard Law School
• On November 14, 2012, Cruz was appointed vice-chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee. He is now spearheading efforts in the Senate to have root-and-branch...
Godspeed, Senator Cruz- I’m all in.

I wasn’t arguing at all that he isn’t qualified. I agree with you .. he is. (Nice list btw). My point is that I don’t believe he stands a chance because he won’t grow his base of support. That is no reflection on him but a reflection on the voters and where they line up in their beliefs.

It will likely come down to money.

Those who cannot get and sustain a strong financial base will disappear due to a lack of interest. However, that may not happen until mid-to-late February, as some low-budget hangers-on may be around a while.

The Republican have scheduled 11 debates starting August 15, 2015 and ending March, 2016. [Exact dates for most debates are still TBD.]

http://www.uspresidentialelectionnews.com/2016-debate-schedule/2016-republican-primary-debate-schedule/

Primaries begin January 18, 2016, with the Iowa Caucuses and the New Hampshire primary January 25, 2016 and continue through June 28, 2016. Several states tried to change their primary dates, but the requests dies.

The nominee is likely to have been determined by the end of April, with the acquisition of SuperDelegates.

Wrong. I live in a part of the country that has tons of hispanics and I do not know one that is Democrat and likes the Clintons. They all know the illegal aliens will come take their jobs and they just do not like them. I have friends that are hispanic and hate illegals much worse than I.

Cruz may not win but he has a much better chance of taking a large percentage of legal hispanic voters than Jebby or Rubio will. This B.S. that all the so called political pundits claim about Texas going blue really worked out well for them with Wendy, didn’t it? It may in the future but I fear it will be from disgust of the pubbies claiming to be conservative when in actuallity they are just d’s and not R’s.

Team up Cruz with Suzanna Martinez, the New Mexico governor that recently signed a law that effectively ends the HORRENDOUS use of civil asset forfeiture, at least at the state level and below, and you have a team that will be VERY DIFFICULT for Hispanic voters to ignore.

And besides that, she seems like a sweet lady and is TOTALLY THE OPPOSITE of the hag.

Maybe Cruz should spend more time courting American voters, and less time pandering to the Hispanic/illegal/LaRaza/gangbanger/mexican drug cartel/CofC cheap labor lobby.

Probably get some better results.

Mexico is dumping the worst dregs of their society on the US, and it’s starting to have a negative impact on this nation as a whole.

Any candidate who doesn’t swear on a stack of bibles to lock down the southern border enforce immigration law ruthlessly, and actively imprison and deport any and all illegals, is not worth backing, period.

The whole mexico problem is getting old. Most people are tired of dealing with that shithole failed state. Either the US government get’s their shit together, or the people WILL deal with it.

Any candidate who doesn’t swear on a stack of bibles to lock down the southern border enforce immigration law ruthlessly, and actively imprison and deport any and all illegals, is not worth backing, period.

Here are Ted Cruz's Immigration related positions.

Please point out a candidate, declared or not, who has a stated, published set of policy positions where Immigration is concerned that is more conservative and back it up with their declared set of policy positions to prove it:

1. Oppose Amnesty - OPPOSE offering the officially estimated 11 million people illegally in the U.S. long-term work permits and/or a path to citizenship (whether through a blanket amnesty or an "earned legalization" or other form)

2. Attrition through Enforcement - fund an Attrition Through Enforcement campaign to cause illegal aliens to self-repatriate back to their home countries over time

3. Mandate E-Verify - jobs held by illegal aliens be opened up for unemployed Americans and legal immigrants already here by requiring all businesses to use the Federal automated, rapid-response internet system (E-Verify) to screen out illegal foreign workers

4. Assist Local Police - federal government be required to cooperate with local officials and pick up all illegal aliens detained by local law enforcement

5. Defund Sanctuary Cities - reduce funding to state and local governments that adopt sanctuary policies and other rewards for illegal foreign workers and the companies that hire them

6. Fund Entry/Exit System - fully fund the completion of the entry/exit system at all borders and points of entry in which every person entering and leaving the U.S. is logged into a database which would notify law enforcement, businesses and others when a foreign tourist, student, worker or other fails to leave on-time? *(US-VISIT was approved by Congress in 1996 and has never been sufficiently funded and is largely incomplete.)

7. Border Security - fund and provide oversight for the full implementation of border security measures already signed into law

8. End Birthright Citizenship - move the U.S. in line with most other nations and stop the policy of giving automatic citizenship at birth to children when both parents are illegal aliens?

9. End Chain Migration - implement the bi-partisan, national Jordan Commission recommendation to limit family-based immigration to the nuclear family of spouse and minor children, thus eliminating the "chain migration" categories of extended family that are the key reason immigration has quadrupled since the 1960s

10. End Visa Lotteries - institute safeguards that will prevent importation of foreign workers any time they would threaten the jobs or depress the wages of American workers

11. Reduce Total Immigration - Until 1976, U.S. immigration tradition was an average of around 250,000 a year; since new legislation in 1990, it has averaged 1,000,000 a year. More than 38 million foreign workers and dependents now live in the U.S. At current rates, immigration will add more than 100 million additional people to the U.S. population by 2060. This government-forced rapid population expansion will require huge increases in energy, roads and other infrastructure and services.
