On Monday, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) became the first major contender to announce his candidacy for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination. Dan Balz has written that Cruz’s candidacy “tests the limits of conservatism,” and based on his congressional roll call voting record, Cruz is the fourth-most-conservative member of the Senate. But how does his ideological position compare to those of Republican primary voters, especially in early states such as Iowa and New Hampshire? Very favorably, as we will see.
We use data from the 2014 Cooperative Congressional Election Study (CCES). The 2014 CCES asked respondents to place themselves and several political figures, including Cruz and former Florida governor Jeb Bush, on a seven-point ideological scale ranging from “very liberal” to “very conservative.”
Historically, a major problem with using this type of perceptual data has been that different people interpret the points on the scale to mean different things. For instance, a Democratic respondent might view the tea party as “extremely conservative”, while a Republican respondent might view the group as only “somewhat conservative.” When respondents distort the ideological scale, their self-placements are not directly comparable....

Nowadays I doubt I will ever see a candidate that is too conservative for me, personally.
I hope that ends up being the case. But plenty of GOP primary voters don’t follow politics closely like freepers do and they will be swayed by the heavy advertising that will come from Jeb Bush and other cronies of the GOP establishment. Grassroots campaigns always have a fight on their hands.

Iowa is early enough so that liberal Republicans don’t necessarily get their way. Too many candidates.
Paultards are always a force at the start, and Evangelicals have a strong presence in the caucuses.
Iowa Gov. Branstad’s establishment is backing Walker, and would mostly switch to if Christie if Walker’s not in. Jeb’s got nowhere to get significant votes.
Can Ted Cruz win the primaries? Of course. But if the puppet masters play dirty with the nomination, their candidate will not win the election.
Here's two sources of voters....people who have been ambivalent about their Christianity and younger voters who will vote for the polar opposite of radical Islam. They'll join with Cruz as a clear choice for decency and a resoration of US values. They will no support Chamber of Commerce and corporate-elitist tools.
Been voting since 1958 and have always contended that all presidential elections, including primaries, should be held on the same day. The way it is now, too often the millions of voter’s voices in Texas don’t really have much of an impact.

I’m glad the article concludes that Cruz is not too conservative. With that said, I don’t think being too conservative or too moderate is the issue in republican primaries. Ultimately it boils down to a number of other factors that have little to do with a candidates message. The MSM plays a role. Money plays a role. Candidate mistakes, e.g., foot in mouth, play a role. Scandals and skeletons play role; and lastly likeability plays a role.
