CT senator to Rupert Murdoch: You should refuse to air the NASCAR race that the NRA’s sponsoring

Think Murdoch will take his “advice,” knowing what the reaction would be among Fox News’s many, many gun-rights-supporting viewers?

Don’t mind Murphy. He’s a freshman from a very blue state where feelings are still understandably raw after Newtown, so apparently he’s decided that no anti-gun grandstanding opportunity is too cheap for him to use to try to raise his profile back home. Coming soon, presumably: Murphy calls on NASCAR to drop the N, R, and A’s from its name.

The National Rifle Association-sponsored NASCAR race slated for this weekend is “inappropriate in the immediate wake of the Newtown massacre,” Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Connecticut, wrote to the race’s broadcaster on Thursday.

“The race not only brings national attention to an organization that has been the face of one side of this heated debate, it also features the live shooting of guns at the end of the race,” Murphy wrote to Rupert Murdoch, the chairman and chief executive of News Corporation, which owns the Fox network where the race will be broadcast…

In his letter to Murdoch, Murphy cited the News Corp. boss’ past support for tighter gun control laws in the United States, including a message Murdoch posted on Twitter shortly after the December Newtown shooting…

Murphy is “inappropriate” to be a US senator.

“It’s almost time.”

I had just assumed we would not make it to the 2016 “elections”

Murphy should be impeached for using his elected office to interfere with legitimate free enterprise in the U.S. Any elected official who tries to damage legitimate free enterprise in our nation should be impeached and sent home - also negate any retirement package for such an official.

Bob Beckel huffed and puffed on The Five yesterday when the race was announced. I bet he got his hand slapped.

Promos on the local FOX station in Dallas aren’t mentioning the oh-so offensive name.

Cable isn’t regulated by the FCC.

I'm not an expert on the subject, but that doesn't sound right as a broad statement. I think some of that depends on whether you're talking about cable carriers (the companies whose services the ordinary viewer would contract for, like Time Warner, for instance) or the cable channels and networks (like FoxNews, CNN, ESPN, CNBC, etc., etc.). I know that the cable carriers are largely regulated by local governments, but I also know that the FCC has to approve of mergers and acquisitions amongst them, or at least that was true during the Clinton years. The guess here is that the networks, like FoxNews are licensed by the FCC as well.

Regardless, Murdoch's NewsCorp operates a whole slew of over-the-air Fox Network television broadcast stations, with outlets in just about every major market in the country. Those definitely do require FCC licensing, renewable periodically. So, he has a lot of skin in the game, no matter what the legal status of cable regulation.

I’m watching the race. I don’t recall NRA being mentioned yet.

The Fox announcers are not mentioning the sponsor of the race. They are calling it “The NASCAR Sprint Cup at Texas” race. No mention of the NRA at all.

That’s right. No mention of NRA at all as far as I could tell. I wonder how high up the Fox hierarchy that decision was made. I also wonder if any contractual agreements were violated.

I’m watching Ch 7 in south Florida, an independent affiliate, not a Fox O&O.
