Has the time come to cut our losses on immigration reform and try to get what we can in a deal? In my column today at The Week, I argue that the prospect of another four years of divided governance in Washington means another four years of unsecured borders and a broken visa system without agreeing to compromise, which should be unacceptable to everyone. Nearly a decade of waiting for total control and an insistence on a hard-line solution hasn’t brought us any closer to political victory, either:

There are miles and miles of FR threads discussing this from the early 2000s.. some very angry exchanges and name calling.

The 1986 "reform" was discussed over and over. Once amnesty was granted to three million (I think about 3 million was the final count while 500,000 was the expected number IIRC) the promises and the law's required border enforcement were ignored as millions and millions poured across the border welcomed by both government and business.

Repeat. That is the suggestion?

Here is one of the most compelling arguments against the silliness that the Republicans must support amnesty else the Hispanic folks won't like 'em and they will never, never, never, never ever win another election.

Maybe some one can explain why the Republican candidates who openly favored "comprehensive reform" and "regularization" still lost the Hispanic vote.

sadly, I agree. Even voting in new politicians won’t help. I think the immigration tide is permanently switched to “on.”

Guess when Mexico totally empties out then perhaps some of us gringos can move down there and restart the republic. We’ll have to clean out the cartels first. And really rethink/recraft how we’d set up government so as to NOT repeat the problems we have here now.

We could also build a supertrain system from Nuevo Laredo all the way to Toronto to give them speedy access to our neighbors to the north! :) (No offense to any canadians—just trying to share the talents of all these immigrants!)
