Gingrich Collapses In Iowa, As Ron Paul Surges to the Front

.....A new poll from Public Policy Polling shows that Ron Paul has taken the lead in the Iowa caucus race, while Newt Gingrich's support is fading fast. A different Gallup poll still shows Grinrich still holding the lead, but slipping, while The New York Times has Paul in the lead as well.

Gingrich has seen his numbers in the PPP poll drop from 27 percent to 14 percent in just three weeks, while his favorability rating is now split at 46 percent for to 47 percent against, the worst of any candidate not named Jon Huntsman. That's quite a fall for someone who looked to be running away with the state and taking charge on the national level.

Mitt Romney has also seen his tick up slightly, putting him just behind Paul for second place. The poll measured voters who are planning to vote in the Republican caucus.

Perhaps the most telling secondary question was, "Do you think Newt Gingrich has strong principles?" Only 36 percent say that he does, but for Paul that number was 73 percent.

Paul is easily the better candidate for social conservative issues and economic and fiscal issues.

On foreign policy, Paul is definitely not in the GOP mainstream to say the least, but I guess if the majority of freepers want mainstream GOP (neocon/strong Defense) foreign policy with huge government spending and liberal social ideals, Romney’s your guy.

I’d be happy to vote for Paul over both Gingrich and Romney in this context.

It will be interesting to see how the PPP polls read on the eve of the voting in Iowa. This is a big test for them since they are clearly an outlier vis a vis other polls. Are they a propaganda engine supporting Romney/Obama (probably) or are they just giving us the facts about the mood in Iowa (unlikley IMHO).

I would prefer Perry myself. But lets face it, he’s not going anywhere. Santorum would be my second choice but...ditto.

Gingrich would be my third choice and he appears to be collapsing.

Neither Ron Paul nor Mitt Romney have been on my list. Ever.

But given that “choice” I’d probably have to vote for Paul and hope he had enough intelligence to pick a foreign policy hawk as VP because as acceptable as Paul might be on fiscal issues, his foreign policy could get a lot of innocent American civilians murdered.

Insider Advantage has Perry at 16% today, Romney at 18% and Newt at 13%. Paul leads in low 20's.

This is their latest poll for Iowa. Perry is surging, Newt and Romney are falling.

Perry is going to not only stop Mitt but Paul too. Thank your Lord!

Frankly, I think the Ron Paul surge is pure media

Paul is also cleaning up 35-14 with the 24% of voters who identify as either Democrats or independents. Romney is actually ahead 22-19 with GOP voters. Young people and non-Republicans are an unusual coalition to hang your hat on in Iowa, and it will be interesting to see if Paul can actually pull it off.

Paul's a lib. Get out of the Republican race Paul. You're wasting our time.

If Perry wins Iowa (I have my doubts) then I will get get on board. Right now I am not actively supporting any of these candidates.

I looked at the internals. Perry has picked up support from men and Indy's. He does the worst with Dems. Paul and Romney do best with Dems and Paul does best with Indy's.

Polls give off false views....[snip] The bad news for Paul, however, is that when asked for their second choice for President, only 9% said they would vote for him after their preferred candidate. That means if supporters of any of the second-tier candidates sense defeat and decided to abandon their choice at the last minute, those votes are more likely to go to Romney. Even if Romney doesn't win, the stronger than expected showing could be the snowball that starts a primary avalanche for him.

The MSM wants someone like Paul to take the lead knowing that he can't best Obama...he is not a street fighter like the Chicago Politician Obama. Gingrich is and can out think Obama...Romney is on the same level as Obama...would any Republican take 2 AF1&2 to Hawaii? Costing the American taxpayer $$$$ we can ill afford - the answer is NO! Only the Obama's live like the nouveau riche they are.
