Can Sarah Palin translate celebrity into real political power?
The Washington Post ^ | February 14, 2010 | Dan Balz

Posted on 02/13/2010 8:31:36 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

Sarah Palin has proved that she can draw a crowd. What she has yet to demonstrate is that she can translate the appeal of a phenomenon into a political force that can attract or mobilize sizable numbers of voters.

The former Alaska governor is the Republican Party's biggest celebrity. She has given voice to a grass-roots movement grounded in anger with Washington and President Obama's policies. But her political future remains in question. Is she presidential timber? A force only within the Republican Party? A protest candidate like George Wallace (minus the racial divisiveness) or Ross Perot?

--snip--

"Right now, she is a figure like [George] McGovern or [Barry] Goldwater, two candidates who led the most intense movements in our country's political history, but who couldn't win the middle."

If Palin harbors presidential ambitions, she has a huge mountain to climb. A new Washington Post-ABC News poll found that 71 percent of Americans do not think the politician who was Sen. John McCain's running mate in 2008 is qualified to be president.

Those numbers are so daunting that some Republicans who otherwise admire what she has accomplished doubt that she will run in 2012. Others say that unless she can transform attitudes dramatically, she cannot hope to win a general election. Still, GOP strategist Phil Musser said, "if she ran for president today, she would be the Republican nominee."

Musser's comments are notable because he is an adviser to Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R), who is eyeing a 2012 candidacy of his own. Palin's political future remains "very much an open question," Musser said, "but the intensity that she brought to the ticket in 2008 hasn't faded, and one could argue that perhaps it's been enhanced."(continued)

Her folksy thing will not play on either coast, I just don’t see her getting the votes”

Where do you come up with this crap anyways?
I live in Staten Island, New York City, and if she came here on her book tour, the line to have her sign her book, would go round the block 5 times!
She has as many fans here as any town in fly-over country. I thought she should have been here on her book tour. She would have been surprised by the huge number of people who turned up to see her and buy her book.
Just last week she was in California and a massive 6,000 people came to her her speak. The hall was sold out TWICE over! That is BOTH east coast and west coast where she is still wildly popular right there for ya.

I have worked in politics and I don’t see her as being electable.

You're not Steve Schmidt's gay lover by any chance, are you ? /sarc>

Cheers!

She is unelectable”,/i>

/sarc Yeah. Unelectable like Scott Brown was “unelectable” in Massachusetts, only 3 weeks before the elections..according to all the “experts”.

She is the prom queen and will always be viewed as that no matter what you want to think”,/i>

Show me a prom queen that has been governor of the biggest state in the country, and had approval ratings of over 90% when she was governor.
Meanwhile, get back to me when you develop a brain will ya?

Let me tell you Pal, I am no RINO. Made my living getting Repubs elected for 5 yes. This RINO term is thrown around too much around here, and all it means is some poster doesn't agree with YOU!. Who the hell are you to determine who is a REAL Republican?

I love her to death, but she is UNELECTABLE. Get over it, Mr. I-Decide-Who-Is-A-Real-Repblican. Who the hell do you think your are. Have you put your time and money on the line? Ever walk the district for signatures? I doubt it. Easy to criticize from your keyboard.

3 2-yr terms = 6, not 5.

With math skills like that, you should be on Pelosi's budget team.

You don't know me or my background.

For all I know *or care*, you could be a Romneybot or one of Cass Sunstein's fifth columnists.

But it is a standard trick, when trying to bring a leading contender down, to try to dispirit the base with whisper campaigns, couched as coming from well-meaning "Eeyores":

"I like [insert candidate's name here], but I just don't know about [insert fear here]."

I'm not drinking anymore: but I did have a shot of Bourbon after dinner tonight. You can even see where I talked about it here.

About four hours ago, it's worn off.

Thanks for your concern.

Cheers!

How many states have you ever governed, sucker?
When did the size of the population determine anything?
Is Nigeria more important than Britain because it has a bigger population than Britain?

And BTW, if Conservatism wins big, explain the makeup of the Congress.

Trivial.

The GOP hierarchy is dominated by RINOs, who bend over for the Dem power brokers.

Notice how easily Romney played Politico to spread authoritative sounding rumours of Fred Thompson's impending withdrawal from the race "unless he finished first or second", before key early primaries in the last election.

Think what might have happened if they had quietly pumped UP momentum for Thompson instead.

Cheers!

a prom queen? ROFL.

If you worked to get the GOP elected it is no wonder we lost the House, the Senate and the Whitehouse.

You argument is Flawed because there is no sec of energy that has every got 8,000 people to attend a campaign event like Palin did in TX this weekend. People that get 8,000 people to attend an event do not settle for Sec of energy. That would be like Bradshaw playing for an arena football league team.

She has been elected to many offices both local and state. So she is anything but unelectable. she has a PROVEN track record of being electable.

Your argument is flawed because you state that she will not win the coasts and thus is unelectable. That is flawed because you do not need to win any of the coast and still win the election or did you miss 2000 and 2004?

a prom queen? seriously the best you could come up with is a sexist remark when faced with the reality of the Electoral votes needed to win an election?

that's all you got?

ROFLMAO

Name them.

Then we can examine their records, and by implication, see whether your rhetoric matches the actions you have claimed.

Cheers!

You'd be lucky if you were only as stupid as an ass.

Even a dog can be a king on the internet.
Your profile means absolutely nothing. You worked on GOP campaigns huh? Yeah..and I am Mother Theressa too.

I wasn't the one criticizing her, you were.

And you're right, it IS all too easy to criticize from your keyboard, isn't it?

As far as my time and money, they belong to my kids at the moment.

Cheers!
