Whoever is responsible should be tried and convicted on the highest possible charge. If it came from a Congresscritter's office and evidence doesn't support a criminal charge, the politician should be pressed to resign, and of course removed from any sensitive committees or positions of leadership. I can imagine a number of Republicans as well as Democrats who might have leaked this.

Politically, the leak helped the President. We have weapons. We have to be prepared for when and how to use them. The media chicken-class are totally out of touch with what America believes and wants from its leadership.

This is so funny. Congress whines all the time that they are not kept updated on things. But if Bush goes after the leaker (who's probably a Democrat), they will complain that it's just a VRWC against Democrats.

Bret Hume and his panel did an analysis of Arkin's involvement and cited him as an Anti-Nuc activist writer in the past who probably published this normal targeting scenerio exercise, mandated by law and commonly updated, as though it was something else to spin it to get the rest of the World worried.

I would love to see Arkin pulled before a Judge to name his source if this is indeed a National Security breech. Even it he doesn't name his source, its possible he could go to jail for contempt if it was a violation of law and he is covering the violator. Its a win-win deal as far as I can tell.

Yes -- this should at least give the NSA, CIA, or FBI a mandate to start investigations on all members of the senate (especially Calif. senators). Catch them red-handed...but hoods on their face and bring them in. One less demon in the senate and we're back on track. I'm gradually losing faith in Bush.... prescription drug plan, no school choice, campaign finance reform(probably), environmental caving-in, a bogus stimulus bill, The Freedom Corps, airport security, amnesty for illegal aliens, yada yada yada the list goes on.

Yes, and I personally wouldn't rule out the possibility that this 'top secret report' was planted by the Pentagon as a means to expose/embarrass/make a point or even to test the -- shall we say -- disinformation waters that were disavowed a couple of weeks before? DRum said that they wouldn't lie to the press, but if my theory is right, it still doesn't constitute a lie: it's entrapment on material that wasn't released.

BEYOND THAT, HOWEVER, I'd love to see a test case before the US Supreme Court on the subject of which has greater weight of law: freedom of the press or exposing national security secrets.

I don't share your thoughts on Bush. If the Republicans had the senate none of this would be happening. He might be playing politics; but I think he's primarily acting as an executive officer. He's focused on the war and he allows the other around him to submanage the home front and he's going to keep the senate responsible for legislation. If we're lucky he'll keep support for Dems down through the election and we'll get back the senate. There are 34 senate races this year. Three dems and two reps are vulnerable. I think he's an honorable man; but we need control otherwise every Republican bill will be blocked and will become a target for media outrage. With total control at best you'll just have several Democrate walk-outs which everyone thinks is childish and immature.
