Justin Gillis The federal government recently bought 1.6 million doses of a drug that protects against certain kinds of radioactive fallout and will buy at least 6 million additional doses in the coming year to create a large national stockpile...Department of Health and Human Services said yesterday.

HHS move comes as activists press state and local governments to create their own stockpiles. The drug is useful if taken within a few hours of exposure to radioactive iodine...

Oh no mass hysteria is going to blow up on this thread. Soon enough freepers will be predicting what day the nuke attack will happen. Probably Easter since the terrorists forgot to attack us on Thanksgiving, Balfour Declaration Anniversary, Christmas, Hanukkah, New Years Eve, Ramadan and the end of Ramadan.

Good you are understanding this dichotomy. One hand worries you & the other does NOTHING to prevent it. But you lost more freedoms over this. Now you can get the bill for bombing caves or supporting these Afgans who your gov will be bring to this country. Let's just open up all boarders & push all of these illegals. Give them guns & send them up to Barbara Boxers, D@ssholes places. Just remember this whole war was about OIL. I'll change my mind when we have gone into Iraq, Iran, Syria -the so-called big boys. You know that won't happen just as the Torch won't be tried.

Clearly prudence dictates that a reasonable supply KI be kept on hand in case of an attack or accident involving nuclear materials. We know that Al Qaeda has tried to obtain nuclear weapons and materials. We know thatfuel ladden airliners have been used to attack targets. Many reactors do not have containment domes that could withstand multiple airliner strikes. No I am not saying we should panic I am merely stating that prudence dictates Potassium Iodide be on hand. Prudence also dictates that at minimum a large quantity of smallpox vacine be on hand. Likewise sntibiotics for bacterial diseases.

Al Qaeda has done some damage we as a nation should be prepared to mitigate any strikes against us while at the same time actively rooting out those who would do harm to us.

Stay well - Stay safe - Stay armed - Yorktown

I have nothing against being prepared for nuclear attack.

Why are we not already prepared for it?

Being nuked is a real possibility. Osama had the time and the money to pull this one off. Is he waiting until he has nukes in place in several cities? Are nukes coming to America by slow seagoing freighters rather than by missile? Tons of drugs are smuggled in every day, why not nukes?

It's time to harden the chips. It's time to tell citizens how to react. This isn't duck and cover of old. It won't be 500 bombs from Russia, it could be 6 over 50 states. It could be one bomb. Maybe none. No one knows.

We know the monsters want to destroy us. We know they want to use these types of weapons. We know because they have said so. We know because we've found their plans.

Americans have the right to safeguard their families. This isn't the cold war, we don't have to lean over and kiss our a-- good-bye. It won't be nuclear winter, or total destruction. At worst, it'll be a few cities.

It's time to get our heads out of the sand and deal with this threat.

It'll be Al Qaeda or some other terrorist organization, it's more a question of "when" than "if." You're right, it's time to take precautions.

--last figures I read, the US was spending about 50 cents a year per head for "civil defense". And KI is relatively, cheap, too, no excuse for anyone to not have a jar of tablets. Hmm, a few mil doses, sounds like "continuation of command and control" is the gov's motto...

got shovel?

We no longer even have bomb and fallout shelters for our citizens.

Only for the elites.

"I have nothing against being prepared for nuclear attack. Why are we not already prepared for it?"

The iodide answer to radiation poisoning may gradually become toxic if taken after the pills have set unused on a shelf for too long, so the government might need to be repurchasing new supplies that are non-toxic.

Just because you've seen a report that the government is buying iodide doesn't mean that we've been unprepared all along. It's probably just evidence that we are prudently restocking supplies that gradually go bad.

Besides, that stuff is cheap. You can buy a 30 day supply (14 day adult supply is needed for any single nuclear disaster) for less than $20 on eBay, so there's really no excuse for mature adults to depend upon our government for something that you can have in your own medicine cabinet...

for illinois residents, by the way, the state with the MOST nuclear plants, the Chicago Tribune ran an article today stating that the state of illinois REJECTS radiation pill. says that illinois has no plans to follow suit of the stockpiling by the federal government. for complete article search chicago tribune site under (radiation pill).

The Intel is that he and others do not possess a fully sequential nuclear weapon..but may have several suite case size "Dirty nukes"...no devasting detonation..but lots of messy radiation grains spread out.

If this ever occurred ..i suspect the casual approach to Saudi Arabia..Iraq and Iran would end.

America would be wild eyed....and as stated in the movie Appocolypse now..."Terminate..with extreme prejudice"

There's only one rational response to information like this -- blind panic. If you'll all excuse me, I'm going to barricade myself in a fallout shelter with enough canned food and ammunition to last through the post-atomic horror.

Seriously, though, it should be at least somewhat comforting to see the government preparing for these kinds of eventualities, even if it is more than a little last minute considering recent events.
