Good Morning Snippy.

I didn't know about the assassination attempt on Seward. I learned something new again.

As a piece of trivia:

Thank heavens for books, therefore, especially ones such as "Devious Derivations," written by Hugh Rawson and published by Crown. Mr Rawson devotes an entire page in his book to the theory you have evidently heard: that the phrase "Your name will be mud" is connected somehow to the Dr. Samuel A. Mudd who treated President Abraham Lincoln's assassin, John Wilkes Booth. Doctor Mudd may or may not have been in on the 1865 assassination conspiracy with Booth, who had broken his leg escaping from the scene of his crime. In any case, Mudd was convicted of conspiracy in the trial that followed, and his name, to the general public, certainly became "mud" in the sense of the phrase -- despised and reviled.

But Doctor Mudd's name is certainly no more than an interesting coincidence, for it cannot have been the source of the phrase. "Mud" had already been in use for more than 200 years, since at least 1708, as a slang term for a fool. According to Christine Ammer, in her book "Have A Nice Day -- No Problem!" (a very fine dictionary of cliches published by Plume), "mud" was commonly applied in the 19th century British Parliament to any member who lost an election or otherwise disgraced himself.

Morning Samwise.

I agree, some teachers concentrated more on memorizing dates and places than they did on what happened and why. The good teachers told you what happened and discussed why it happened and how it affected other events.

Good morning apackof2, you might be interested in this for further reading.

From the diary of Mary Henry

[April] 15th. We were awakened this morning by an announcement which almost made our hearts stand still with consternation. The President was shot last night in the Theater. When the morning paper was issued he was still alive although little or no hopes were entertained of his recovery but now the tolling bells tell us he has ceased to breathe. He is dead. Mr. De Bust has just told Hannah he died at ½ 7 o'clock. Deeply must the country mourn this death for although uncouth & ungainly he was true hearted, magnanimous and kind and in the present crisis ready to follow the such a course with the defeated belligerants as would win them back to their allegiance to the Government and subdue the rebellion in their hearts as well as subjugate their aims.

The South has lost in him a good & judicious friend. His successor Johnson heartily desires the death of the leaders of the rebellion & is in every way ultra in his views. I have not given the particulars of the disaster. It was announced in the yesterday's papers that the President with Gen Grant would be at Ford's Theater in the evening and a large crowd collected there in consequence. Gen Grant however left the city before night for N.Y. Mrs. Lincoln had not been well & the President went to the place of amusement with reluctance, not wishing to disappoint the audience.

I wonder how different the reconstruction period would have bee if Lincoln had not been assassinated. IMHO Booth helped bring about the very thing he feared by killing Lincoln.

There was thread last year(?) about Booth, there were people actually trying to defend what Booth did and saying he was a hero. Just some proof that someone can be conserative and an idiot.

Booth was a murderer and conspirator, nothing heroic about that.

This is a wonderfully detailed account of everyone connected to the Lincoln assasination. If your'e not a professional historian, snippy, you should be.

I've been to Ford's Theater National Historical Site and it's really interesting. We always buy books, literature, in the National Parks bookstores, but there wasn't anything there as comprehensively put together as this. I bought books there and didn't learn nearly as much.

One of those prisoner masks was on display in the Ford's Theater Museum. No wonder Paine was "traumatized", it scared the fire out of me. And I have no sympathy for Paine, the account in the link you gave about his attack in the Seward house was vicious. His gun misfired when he aimed at Frederick Seward's head, and then he went to pistol-whipping, knife-slashing and stabbing. If his gun hadn't misfired at the start, he probably would have killed several, instead of leaving five wounded who recovered.

John Surratt certainly made out like a bandit; fleeing to Canada, then Europe and finally tried in 1867 after the hysteria had died down. He walked after his wife had swung from a rope.

Lincoln's bodyguard, John Parker of the Metropolitan Police Force, had left his post.

Don't you know, it must have been rough to live with that? And it hadn't been clear to me that if all the designated victims had been killed, the U.S. government would have been thrown into chaos as to swearing in a new president, and who knows have that would have come out.

Excellent account, and is a list of the Foxhole threads posted somewhere?
