Killed by aliens ala Dr.Who.
Maybe they’re still Romaning around
“...not to say the cultural impact of Braveheart...”
I happened to think about that movie yesterday, when I read about Scotland wanting to remain in the EU and be its vassal, its slave. None of the genes of William Wallace and his soldiers has survived to this time.
so perhaps the 6 legion replaced the 9... hmmm... or were they the same... just transposed.
i know i know... it would be VI and IX... but wouldn’t it be that far off of a theory.
My theory: The Ninth Legion was caught unawares by a rising sea level. So, yes. They were early victims of Global Warming.
The Legion was the “under dogs” against masses of savages.
Hadrian's Wall.
" east of the river Irthing the wall was made from brick shaped stone and measured 10 Roman feet (9.7 ft or 3 m) wide and 5 to 6 metres (1620 ft) tall;
west of the river the wall was made from turf and measured 6 metres (20 ft) wide and 3.5 metres (11.5 ft) high."
They went north and were seduced by red-haired Scottish lassies and went native.
Legio IX Hispana
Iberian Legionaries fighting in Britain’s cold and gray wasteland.
There were 2 “walls” in Britain if you care.
Everybody knows about Hadrian’s Wall, but hardly anybody knows about the Antonine Wall (Vallum Antonini) built a few decades later. Not much of it exists anymore.
thanx
Interesting.
“The legend of the Ninth gained form thanks to acclaimed novelist Rosemary Sutcliff”
I remember reading this excellent book and including it in our home school. My fathers family were from Northern Scotland, Aberdeenshire. They were very tall and brawny with Scots chiseled features but had a light Mediterranean skin coloring that always made me think there must have been some Roman soldiers in the lineage.
