Military Update: Vet groups uniting to oppose privatized care, defend VA
Sierra Vista Herald ^ | TOM PHILPOT

The nation’s leading veteran services organizations are rallying behind the Department of Veterans Affairs and its beleaguered health care system, touting the experience of staff, the breadth of services and its holistic approach to care delivery that they argue the private sector cannot match.

The VSOs are warning of politicians and groups with agendas that constantly criticize VA health care, refuse to acknowledge reforms and thus advance a camouflaged campaign to dismantle VA health care. They also say it is time to better educate their own members on actions being taken to improve to the healthcare system that millions of veterans rely upon.

The rally of vet groups is taking shape informally for now. It’s no coincidence that it occurs amid a presidential campaign, and with the congressionally chartered Commission on Care days away from releasing its report on modernizing veterans’ health services over the next 20 years.

I have to agree with them. I have Medicare, Corp. retirement insurance and the VA. I prefer the VA... At least in my area they are great.

?????

One of the top management got fired a year or so ago for VA mismanagement. Either the VA’s doing the job right or they’re not.

Which is it?

I’ve had nothing but great service and care at my local VA clinic and hospital.

In a government run health care system like Canada and especially the UK, there are plenty of stories of ‘good service’ to go around.

But then there are the waiting list stories of people waiting for care and sometimes dying.

If they are numerous enough, they become news.

The VA is such a government run healthcare system.

Veterans should have all options available to them for care if they are on a waiting list somewhere and not getting the treatment they need as we have learned in the last year or two.

Memphis VA is where vets go to get poor service and die. It has to do with the number of affirmative action hires at the facility.

If you have to drive 90 miles and/or wait for 2 weeks for an appointment, just ain’t right.

Been in the VA healthcare system for 20+ years. They are first class. Appointments seen on time. Uncrowded waiting rooms. Professionalism every where. Modern equipment.

They are focused on wellness.

They have an internet based website for re-ordering meds as well as connected directly to the Nationwide Electronic medical records system.

Signs are everywhere thanking veterans for their service.

Most of the medical people are OK.

The bureaucrats are organized crime.

You don’t have to fight with every VA bureaucrat.

You only have to control the VA employee pay computer.

Turnabout is fair play.

Stop paying the bad ones. Blame it on a computer glitch. Make them fill out a form. Lose the form. Make them fill out another form. Leave it on a desk for six months. Tell them to call the Inspector General. Don’t answer the calls. Take messages and ignore them. Tell them there is no record of them ever being a VA employee. Call them belligerent and have the armed guards standing behind them.

Treat them like they treat the Veterans.

I get excellent care from the VA and have been getting that care for years.

The veteran population is older and sicker than the general population and privatizing the system will only make it more expensive for everybody.

There are admittedly some problems in the system but is it broke NO. If it ain’t broke don’t let our idiot politicians try to fix it....

So far, so good at the VA in Houston. But I read the other day they’ve been caught cancelling appointments to make their numbers look better.

I almost bled to death in the Memphis VA Hospital in the early 70s. Had tonsils taken out by a foreign doctor who could barely speak English. I was hurting so bad I was thinking “Death will be welcome.”

I’m sure all those minorities in Houston are due to affirmative action, too. It’s very difficult to see a white tech or clerk.

Guess it depends on where you are. My Dad’s VA was so far away, it took all day to get there, see the Doctor, and get back home. He only did that so that he could get his meds.

For Everything else, he went to the nearest hospital and doctors. When you have a heart attack, and other severe problems, you can’t spend 4 or 5 hours getting there.

I’d think that for those that live in Rural places, being able to see their hometown Doctor, and go to the nearest hospital would be important too.

Maybe what they need to do is give the Vets a choice. That way if the local VA is not available, or no good, they could opt for VA Insurance to pay for the services or something?

I don’t know - but I do know the Vets deserve the best whatever it is they need.

They wont be able to abolish the VA and send all the vets into Obamacare if the VA is efficiently doing its job.

The politicians say its a travesty and obviously something has to be done. So we will do THIS.........

BOHICA baby. You guys are used to no lube, right?

No one is stopping you from going to a VA facility. You merely are being given more options

The VA will fool you for a number of years then they will really screw you. Private care is much better. I have been CAT 1 for over 40 years.
