Sgt. Maj. Of The Marine Corps Says Lower Pay For Marines “Will Raise Discipline”, Make Them Less....

Can you believe this guy? Who is he representing, the president of the troops he is supposed to stand up for? Last time I checked our Marines are plenty disciplined and far from entitled.

His point being - we don’t do it for the money.

I always saw the Marines as rather like a monastic order. Most aren’t going into it for the money - and in some ways increased poverty focuses one on the other reasons for service.

What does he care, he’s on his last billet before retirement.

Agree and not agree.
The marine will be OK, but his family is already struggling to survive. If his wife and children are having problems making ends meet it will affect his morale and his effectiveness at doing his job.

Yes, and it should be cut down to what a new Marine, just out of boot camp would be getting. Let him live on that for awhile.

America’s military families on food stamps is a great summation of the Obama regime

I think if they want to retain quality in the military they must get rid of the pension ticket....or change it dramatically so you don't have so many prefumed princes and hangers on in there....

that taken care of, then good pay and benefits while in are what is required....

A new marine makes $16,500. A new 2nd Lt $42,700.

Who on FR wants to volunteer to go over to Azzaghanistan and hike out into Indian country to get their butt shot off for $16,500 and all the MRE’s they can eat? So cut it to $16,000 how about then? Maybe we can get them to fight for free.

Im not going to say I agree with it, but this is hardly a new theory.

Higher pay allows them to take care of their families better, if they have them; it allows them more luxuries..some good, some bad; and allows them more opportunity to get into trouble.

For people who do things out of duty, or as volunteers, frequent monetary rewards can lead to *less* volunteerism, and *less* devotion to duty. A significant part of military performance is the sense of community, a sense of pride, a fulfillment of responsibility. Money used to replace those things may or may not be an improvement. expectations matter as well.

In short, it’s a more complicated question than implied.

Maybe the Marine can get his whole family to live in the tent with him.

If I was the Commandant of the Marine Corps, I would fire him on the spot. I could have no trust or confidence in his leadership ability after a comment like that.

The SGM is a douche. Watch the good Marines leave the service.

Well the Commandant is not thought very highly of but you would be hard pressed to find a Marine who would admit that in public.

A lot of us would volunteer for that, and did when the pay was not as high as it is today.

What is the actual amount of money and benefits collected for a military family of a PFC with over 2 years in service and in a combat zone?
