My wife knows, that as a nurse you can't get too emotionally involved when it comes to the people your caring for, but with this one she broke the rules. Mr. Sampson was her buddy. Mr. Sampson was the oldest living WW2 Marine in West TX. He was a Marines, Marine. A true hero!
Richard Wood Sampson, known affectionately as Serenity Sam, to his AA friends and as Dick in the construction industry, went to the Big Meeting on Sunday, March 30, 2008.
He was a carpenter and a veteran. He graduated from Clifton Forge High School in Clifton Forge, Va., and immediately enlisted to serve his country. He served during World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War before settling in California to become a master carpenter. He moved to Texas in 1980.
He is survived by his sister, Isabel Sampson of Florida.
Memorials may be directed to the Gifts of Hope, c/o Mary Collier, Allison Cancer Center, 400 N. Garfield, Suite 100, Midland 79701.
The family would particularly like to thank Danny and Bruce of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory for their patience, kindness and compassionate assistance. They would also like to thank the nurses and other staff at Lamun-Lusk-Sanchez Texas State Veteran's Home. God surely created nurses from a special mold.
Arrangements under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring. Online condolences can be made at: www.npwelch.com.
