Morning Snopercod.

Quite a few of my friends' dads were on their way to Japan from Europe. I've never heard any of them complain about the bombs being dropped.

Thanks Snopercod.

I thank you dad for his service. I sure hope you at least still have the original diary. Thank you for sharing a little of your dad with us.

We learned this morning of the atomic bomb they dropped on Hiroshima. Sounds like hot stuff.

Radio reports that Nagasaki was given the same dose as Hiroshima.

Your dad's words bring back memories of my friends dads. They had the same matter of fact "tone" about the bombings. No "soul searching", second guessing or "How could we? remarks". Just a statement of facts and a hope that the Japanese would finally quit. You could hear the "whatever it takes" attitude in their voices.

Thanks so much for sharing your dad's words. It is so different to see the words of those who lived these events in our history.

I sure hope he didn't drop his load shortly after the picture was taken. ;-)

Funny you should say that. He dropped in the bay right in front of us, then did a 45 degree banked turn and flew over the top of the dock. There was a fine mist that followed his passage. Great!

Those of us who gained that victory have nothing to be ashamed of neither do we offer any apology. Some suffered, some died. The million or so of us remaining will die believing that we made the world a better place as a result of our efforts to secure peace that has held for almost 50 years.

Amen Colonel Tibbets. Well said and it is sad that America has become apologetic to the extent of "political correctness" run-a-muck.

Good morning Humal. I see Sam has answered the leaflet question. I haven't been able to find what, if any, direction the Japanese emperor issued to the people in response. As I understand it all Japanese were indoctrined to fight to the last person. I doubt if they would have left, just my opinion though.

I'm glad the "preacher" in your church was soon booted out!

fyi, a BROKEN ENGINE caused my dad to be "temporarily" removed from COL Tibbets' flight crew.

if you can believe this, my dad was the ONLY engine master technician that knew how to repair that particuliar problem with a B-29 engine, who was anywhere near the USAAC filed.

he was supposed to have repaired the engine & then been flown to Seattle to be re-united with the crew.alas, the part didn't make it in time & the war was over by the time the B-29 was ready for service.

my dad was very fond of COL Tibbets!

To: snopercod; Pukin Dog
Thanks for sharing part of your dad's diary snopercod. Two things emerge. Thankfully on his way to Japan we dropped the bombs so the invasion was called off (We did a thread last August about Operation Olympic, the invasion that never was) and what also stands out is he proves that what we always think of when thinking of Navy pilots...what a fun bunch! Talk about the life of leisure when they have down time. These guys know how to relax! We are thankful for your father's service and yours, too.

Ping to Navy pilot 'Pukin Dog', this diary of snopercod's dad at post 15 might interest you. :-)

Do you guys have all the fun or what?
