WASHINGTON, D.C., June 8, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The right to life was the foundation of American liberty, but a widespread moral change must occur before abortion is made illegal again, Republican lawmaker and presidential candidate Ron Paul told religious conservative activists on Friday.
“If we do not have high respect for life, how can we be dealing with our personal freedom, personal privacy, our rights to homeschool our kids, the right to pick our religion and make personal choices on what we do?” Paul asked the audience at the Faith and Freedom Coalition conference in downtown Washington, D.C.
“Life is precious, I’m an OB-doctor, I’ve delivered over 4000 babies,” said Paul. “But as an Ob-doctor, let me tell you – life does begin at conception.”
Without a “high regard and respect for life”, Paul explained, Americans cannot have the liberty that “made this country so great.”
Paul recounted the social unrest he observed in the 1960s, which brought about a great sea change in US politics. “The people changed before the laws changed” - a historical lesson, he said, that conservatives should take to heart.
“Morality has a lot to do with legislation,” explained Paul. “We don’t have abortions today because the law permits it - that’s made it worse – but the law accommodated the social changes that had occurred. It was the breakdown in our social system at the time.”
Paul mentioned that although the unpopular Vietnam War, burgeoning drug culture, and a careless attitude toward personal responsibility were agents of social change, the blame chiefly lay on the rejection of the family based on marriage, beginning with families having children out of wedlock.
Now this trend has grown into a “cultural” phenomenon, said Paul, adding that the breakdown of the family and family values is becoming “epidemic.” “This is where our real problems come from,” said Paul.
“We would like to think that all we have to do is elect the right politicians and everything is going to be okay. But the government is a reflection of the people and their values,” he continued. “That is why the burden is on people like you to make sure we have those values.”
Paul said the family was ingrained in the nation’s Christian heritage, and reminded them of the founding father’s warning that the US Constitution would last only as long as Americans remained a moral people.
“We are at a crossroads,” Paul warned. He added that religious faith was essential to understanding “true liberty.”
Paul said that Americans also needed to embrace a study of free markets, constitutional foreign policy, and also gain a “Biblical understanding of honest money” – taking aim at the paper currency of the Federal Reserve in favor of returning to precious metals like gold.
“We need to believe once again in the principles of liberty, we need to understand why the family is the bedrock, the educational system should be through the family and the church. We should be promoting homeschooling and private schooling and not depending on our public school system,” he said.
Paul added that it was a hopeful sign for the United States that more young people were showing an enthusiasm for rediscovering personal liberty and constitutional government.

An unusually astute observation from someone whose observations usually elicit a face palm from me.
However, the minority libs in a rogue SCOTUS in the 70's hijacked the abortion issue making an end run around the Constitution and the majority of the American people.
I don't agree that there's nothing we can do about this slaughter of the innocents.
1) The next POTUS MUST put in Justices and judges who mean what they say in tier oath of office to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution and overturn unconstitutional precedent including the legal heresy of Roe v. Wade
2) The next POTUS should also use the "bully pulpit" to tell the states to nullify federal ruling and law in favor of abortion and ban abortion state by state. Calls for impeachment would rise but would br lost I think because most still believe abortion is murder and is wrong. Either way, the risk of impeachment is worth stopping or significantly slowing the slaughter of 50 million plus unborn babies.
I hope the ron paul freaks won’t glome onto this issue. LOL, they will.

And believing that the profusion of laws renders a moral society is the worst form of self-deceit.
I don’t think this will be well received by the folks who wanted him to legalize heroin.
Given my tag, I think you can figure out that I at least was a Ron Paul supporter until recently. I do not know if I am or not right now, but I can tell you I am not one of those radical libertarian nutjobs or the cultists that follow Ron Paul no matter what he says or does.
As an unswerving supporter for nearly four years, until recently (his book did made go like “huh?” on a lot of things) that Ron Paul is mixed bag. Sometimes, as a social conservative, going like “YEAH!!!!” and other times you are like “What were you thinking?” He says this now, but six months ago he voted to repeal DADT. He says abortion equals murder and that allowing murder is a violation of the provision to maintain a republican form of government in the Constitution, but he refuses to take the next logical step that abortion is no longer a tenth amendment issue. He also says that marriage be allowed to be defined by each couple entering into a contract. Imagine the consequences of such a notion...
I think the problem is that he has been infected by radical libertarianism. I think, at heart, there is a conservative in there, and it comes out on these occasions. However, in order to avoid base in his base of LewRockwell.com fiends and his extremely close personal association with Lew Rockwell (he recommended that LewRockwell.com be read by Liberty Defined readers) he can say the most stupid, radical, inane comments at times. The whole speech referenced was great, but I just don’t think I can continue to support him when he can be so comprising with the radical libertarianism, to the point I think he might be one of them. Either he needs to come out and publicly denounce the anarchist/radical wing of his base, and express his profound patriotism, or else he needs to come out and identify himself as one of them.
In any event, I think his association with Lew Rockwell, his promoting of their ideas, and his inconsistent stands on social issues show a lack of judgment. I could go on about all the nonsense that goes on in the Paul campaign that I know about, but that is irrelevant to the core issues here.
Traditional Judeo/Christian morality and worldview are under attack daily using tax money under the banner of 'education' and 'information'.
The United States historically had laws which worked to preserve our law and our culture against the cesspool of the left, until leftwing activist judges (many times appointed by Republicans) reinvented the Constitution by ignoring all history and precedent.
The attack is from the left, not the right.

Yes, laws are useful and even necessary... BUT ONLY laws which are in exact keeping with the Constitution and which do NOT seek to punish individual, NON-COERCIVE behaviors. Such things, which may often be considered “sinful,” are not the rightful province of governments, but of churches and families. Behaviors which involve the involuntary participation of others (i.e.: robbery, rape, child molestation and the like) may properly be criminalized by states and municipalities. Federal crimes, constitutionally, may only include treason, piracy and counterfeiting.
