Exactly. These “satanists” said themselves that they don’t believe in satan and that their real intent for the statue was to make a political point about free speech. And even that’s BS since we know their *real* real intent was to piss off Christians.

So their display was basically a nuisance motivated by cynicism and disrespect. It wasn’t done for the civic purpose that motivated the state to allow such displays. And in the end it was treated with the same level of respect that it deserved.

Now, as a technical matter, tearing it down was probably illegal and constitutes a technical violation of free speech. But at the deeper level this was a justified tit for tat. The annoying “satanist” douchebags thought they’d toy with the normies but — in an extremely satisfying break from the usual pattern — they got dunked on royally.

"Free Speech" just constrains the government from silencing people. When an individual does something to another individual, it isn't a criminal matter, but a civil one.

They can sue, and if they do, I would ask for a jury trial.

Is there a statue of Christ or Mary at the capitol? No?

I’m a free speech supporter, but if they put up Baphomet and not Christ, that’s not a free speech issue. I promise that if someone sculpted something beautiful of Mary holding baby Jesus, then wanted to display it at the capitol, the sculptor would get a big middle finger instead.

It wasn’t free speech. Did they have a raffle or random drawing for the one display space that they had? If not, then some bureaucrat chose to allow this display. That would not be free speech. That would be government speech.
