Good question. There is an undercurrent in the U.S. that hates the church, and waits for an excuse to attack. There are been 39 church arsons in the U.S. in 2021.
I guess my point is ...as Hillary would say,
“what difference does it make now?”
The people who did this and the people who were victims have long since passed away. For modern people to take out revenge on now innocent modern people who had nothing to do with the sins of the past is illogical.
In the face of all the progress made, the abuses ceased, etc. What is modern society’s justification to revisit that which was done 100+ years ago to seek punishment or revenge? To study the event, understand what went wrong, and what was done to correct it and how that influences us today...fine. But the revenge, rage and anger do nothing to even remotely meet those points.
Butlerweave asked how many indigenous children died outside the schools. A lot of people are asking that question, as in did they die at a higher rate than children not in the schools. I tried to find an answer to that myself days ago when I first read about this. There is no clear answer, so I simply shared some information points toward a best guess.
I completely agree with you that anger, revenge and destruction does no one any good and think you have written some excellent posts here.
There are people still alive who were taken from their homes and forced to attend these residential schools. Attendance continued to be mandatory through the 1970s, although more schools were converted to day schools in the last decade of operation. Some schools continued to operate into the 1990s.
That said, First Nations leaders think the fires were set by young people who never set foot in one of the schools:
“Many residential school survivors hate the Church with a passion — but I have never heard any of them ever suggest people turn to this.
“There is a proper way of displaying anger. I mean, I’m angry about it. I talk to a lot of residential school survivors and sure there is a lot of hatred and bitterness and anger — but that still doesn’t mean you go and do arson.
“We think it is the same group of punks that burnt all of them down,” he said of the Okanagan fires. “And the young people that burned down these churches never went to residential schools.”
And from one of their Chiefs:
“It’s misplaced ignorance, stupidity, an alright criminal act by young people,” he presumed.

Justin Trudeau has tried to deflect all blame onto the Catholic Church, demanding the Pope apologize, etc. And no wonder. His father was Prime minister for a decade when these schools continued to be compulsory. Nevermind that Pope Benedict already made a most moving and heartfelt apology First Nations leaders said satisfied them.

I don’t think they should be burning anything down, including government buildings. You are quite right that their anger should be addressed at the government, though. The government was in charge of the schools and made the policy. They did topple statues of Queen Victoria, Queen Elizabeth II and Captain Cook. Because colonialism I guess.
