Revelation 13:15 The second beast was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that the image could speak and cause all who refused to worship the image to be killed. 16 It also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark [in] their right hands or [in] their foreheads, 17 so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of its name. 18 This calls for wisdom. Let the person who has insight calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man. That number is 666.
In a small paragraph, the Bible has packed in a surprising amount of information regarding the coming "Mark of the Beast". Why is this important to know? The Bible is clear when it reveals that only those with wisdom and understanding will recognize and discern the coming "Mark". I do not consider myself to be a paragon of wisdom and understanding, however I do take serious God’s challenge to strive for wisdom and understanding. I want to know what the "Mark" is so that when it comes I am not deceived. I also know that if God challenges us, he gives us the resources we need in His word.
Why is it important to understand this now? Simply put, we are in the last days. Israel is a nation again after 2000 years of exile according to God's promise (Amos 9:9–11, Hosea 5:15). Most of the unfulfilled prophesies remaining in the Bible somehow relate to the rebirth of the nation of Israel and the final judgment on Israel and the entire world because of unbelief...

Why would Rev. 1:1 appear in the book if it meant that:
The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to show unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass...”
Shortly come to pass?
Wouldn’t that have been a good place to say: “Things that will happen over the course of a few thousand years?”
The ability to buy and sell using a mark was a concept extant during the Roman empire. A person had to go to the “court” and pledge allegiance to the emperor, or he could not buy and sell.
I think the number 666 is a code for the end times Christians to solve. They need to ID the beast and not be fooled by him.
Today we may not fully understand the significance of the numbers, but the end times saints will.
What if it’s just around the corner?
A day to the Lord is 1000 years. For days we have been in the “last days”. We are at the very last of the last days right now!
I was asking about the extremely clear meaning of Rev. 1:1, which makes no mention of days or years. It merely says “shortly” and expresses the same sentiment at least two more times, and also after the vision is over.
Then either we’ll be home with Jesus or finding out for ourselves what 666 means...although with the Holy Spirit removing the restraint on evil, I would really rather not be here during such a time.
For the believers in the last days, I think the Holy Spirit will be a definite force in their lives, much stronger than we have today. This will be a survival train the saints will need in such a dangerous time.
