Thou shalt not commit adultery. Exodus 20:14
We are in the second table of the Law of God. This is the part which is summed up in this commandment, You Shall Love Your neighbor as Yourself. The first table is about how we are to Love God, the second, is about loving our fellow man.
We are to love his life, and not to murder him, hate him. seek to diminish him, belittle or insult our neighbor in any way, for these are all forms of murder.
We are also to love his marriage.
Marriage is sacred, its sanctity is protected by God, as the book of Hebrews warns us,
Marriage is honorable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.( Hebrews 13:4)
Literally, Marriage is to be honored by all. God will judge those who violate marriage. The word adultery means to mix in. Unadulterated milk is theoretically pure milk, nothing added.
Adultery is the sin that introduces another element into that which God ordained to be shared exclusively between husband and wife. For this cause shall a man leave his Father and Mother and shall cleave unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh . Adultery is a sin against God himself, because he is the author of marriage.
It is possible to commit adultery before one is even married. When anyone approaches sexual intimacy casually, without intention of marriage, they are defiling the future marriage which might come to pass.
For example, A young man who claimed to be Christian kissed and held a young girl, in a way which was inappropriate, so I asked him Are you going to marry her?. He looked at me like I was crazy, and said, We are only 16, what are you talking about?
My response was Chances are you two will not marry each other, you will go your separate ways and one day find a true love whom you will marry, right ? In that case you just kissed another mans wife! You are guilty of adultery.
Unfortunately, Adultery has become routine, as Marriage is mocked , ridiculed, drastically redefined and blasphemed. There are millions of Adulterers in our land, because the culture itself is adulterous.
Adultery is one of the exclusionary sins Paul warned about when He said
Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. ( I Corinthians 6:9-10)
Those who practice adultery will not inherit the Kingdom of Heaven! Without repentance, there remains nothing for Adulterers but a certain fiery judgment.
All sins can be confessed, forsaken and forgiven, Jesus died for all of our sins. But Adultery is devastating, even when there is repentance and forgiveness. To break up a family, disgrace your own family, hurt and humiliate your husband or wife, and possibly disenfranchise your own children is a serious consequence.
For all of the reasons listed above, the book of Proverbs warns us the He that commits Adultery lacks sense
But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul. A wound and dishonour shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away. For jealousy is the rage of a man: therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance. He will not regard any ransom; neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts. ( Proverbs 6:32-35)
Jesus went further in his exposition of this commandment, when he condemned inward adultery, which is always the pre-cursor to the act of Adultery.
Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. ( Matthew 5:27-28)
Pornography is Adultery. It is the corruption of marriage, and future marriage, and of the innocence of children. Pornography deforms the personality, making it impossible for a young man to truly relate to the opposite sex. Pornography and sexual immorality de-mans men, making them passive, easily controlled (by the Government),and foolish and immature.
The problem is an adulterous heart. This is why the plague of pornography has been so destructive to the modern western world. God looks at the heart. Pornography is so dangerous, and possibly addicting, not to mention so destructive of the personality, Jesus literally warned us,
And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. ( Proverbs 5:29-30)
You have to cultivate a holy hatred for all sin. It also helps to develop a healthy fear. Any man can be trapped by the secret images, but they are a pathway to hell. As Proverbs 7 warns us of the harlot and her deadly snares,
Hearken unto me now therefore, O ye children, and attend to the words of my mouth. Let not thine heart decline to her ways, go not astray in her paths. For she hath cast down many wounded: yea, many strong men have been slain by her.Her house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death.( Proverbs 6: 24-27)
One cannot break free of any sin that he loves, that is why it is important to beseech God to give you a Holy Hatred and revulsion and even fear of such sins as Adultery. Joseph literally ran out of the room, when Potiphars wife presented herself to her.
Obviously sin has temporary pleasures, and the world would promote, justify and even glorify adultery, through her movies and literature. But the Bible alone strips away the veneer and reveals the ugly, selfish, deformed aspect of this sin for all to see.
Love is not a feeling. it involves feelings, but is not a feeling, otherwise, how could God command us to love? How could we promise on our wedding day to love each other/ I cannot promise to fellowship anything for any length of time , let alone for life!
Love is a commitment to each others good. We promised God to Love each other, till death do us part, and usually in the overall course of Life, Love means sticking with the choices and promises we made to each other. Love will keep us from this sin, and all sins. Selfishness and self idolatry will lead us into it.
One way to look at the ten commandments is to approach them from the opposite direction.The seventh commandment is a prohibition, but it could also be stated positively as in Hebrews. You should, Love, Honor and Respect Marriage.
The Author of marriage, Jesus said,
What God has joined together, let no man put asunder.
covetousness is the root of most sins- even just imagining wrong thoughts about relations with others is a sin- cultivating wrong thoughts is a sin- dwelling on wrong thoughts is a sin- and can be the sin of adultery- even though the physical act is never done- according to Christ-
Adultery is just the end result of coveting
And pastors are among the worst offenders of this commandment.

Some couples who marry without God’s ordainment or who cohabitate, such couples are lost, uneducated in biblical teaching, without wisdom, they don’t know what they are doing, their children can also be lost which is the whole point.
My reading is that Godly marriage is not to create vast numbers of children but to make Godly children.
The consequences of wandering outside the strictness of this prescription are well known. Abraham, Sarah, Hagar and their conflicts and relations, I view as consequences of going outside God’s strict regimen. Jacob and his wives, same thing along with many more examples.
Ok, so I know and likely you know what God requires here.
But humanity is so imperfect there must be some vehicle for bringing some couples that have wandered back to the path of righteousness. Their errant marriages must be washed away, they most be freed from sin, they must be given a clean slate.
Then again there is the moral hazard of devolving into ‘anything goes’, ‘promiscuous free love’, to outright debauchery where it may seem everyone’s mother is a slut, or worse the mother was never known.
There seems to be no doubt that a man and a woman who truly care for each other are and will be healthier together than apart.
But then, what about their souls?
The general problem may be intractable.
Jesus said, The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. (Mark 2:27)
God hates divorce.
American society has a 50% divorce rate.
I believe strongly the high divorce rate of American society is highly correlated with a drifting away from biblical teaching and morality. The results and consequences are devastating, unGodly children, spiritual confusion and emptiness, porn, demolition of virtue.
The Roman Catholic Church does not allow divorce nor remarriage. The RCC is very strict. Yeah ok RCC, what about Nancy Pelosi and other so-called Catholics? Don’t get me wrong, I love the RCC and its incredible priests who have literally saved entire generations of people, but many young catholic people run away from their Church because of the hypocrisy they see. They are too weak or immature to do anything about it or to see that humanity, even within their Church, is never perfect.
The Orthodox Church frowns on divorce but allows remarriage if an Orthodox priest is persuaded the new marriage will be respected, that the couple to be remarried have paid penitence, and the couple will strive “to do better.”
I like the “try and do better” spirit.
The “try and do better” prescription is of course, not always effective.
Rabbis, Pastors, and Priests should be called upon to assist all persons to “try and do better.” I think in general they do but in this day and age they could use a little butt kick in that direction. Rabbis, Pastors, and Priests should “try and do better” to help others “try and do better.”
