Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

(Music in The Bible)

Psalm 1

Psalm 1.

1 Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,
2 but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
and who meditates on his law day and night.
3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
    whatever they do prospers.

4 Not so the wicked!
    They are like chaff
    that the wind blows away.
5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.
6 For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.

New International Version (NIV)(End of Scripture Passage)

Today we start with the "Great Hebrew Songbook", called simply, "Psalms".

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Two days ago, Harold Bloom passed away. Bloom was the author of The Western Canon, which lionizes and extols the great literary tradition of Western Civilization. Modernists don't like him much, because nearly all of his beloved authors were "White, Nominally Christian, Dead, European Males". Nevertheless, his defense of these mighty authors (like Shakespeare, Dickens, Goethe, etc) is correct, in my opinion, as such authors form a "Canon" (a template) upon which we hang many of our expressions, culture, arts, music, and so on. (I was saying the idiom 'Something is rotten in the state of Denmark' LONG before I ever read Hamlet, and that's just one example.) Many Hollywood Movies are derived from this "Canon", as are Operas, Ballet, and Classical Music in general.

In the study of Classical Piano, there is also a "canon" of sorts. It is called "The Literature", and no study of the piano is complete without it. Many Great Composers wrote simplified pieces for the younger student, and compiled them into books specifically to teach piano, but have become "Piano Literature" because they are beautiful. "The Happy Farmer" and "The Wild Rider" by Schumann are two perfect examples of this kind of piano piece. Both are part of the piano repertoire even though they are relatively easy to play. Mozart even wrote a sonata called "Sonata facile" (Easy Sonata) which may have been easy for HIM, but maybe not so easy for other people. It, too, is part of the "Canon".

This brings us to today's Scripture. The Psalms are "Canon" for Christians and Jews all over the world. The have been translated from the original Hebrew into THOUSANDS of languages. Unlike religious works that only seem to make sense in their original tongues, the Psalms resonate with Power, Beauty, and Glory in whatever translation one is reading. We have studied Psalms before on this Thread, but they never grow old. Great composers have, over the years, set the Psalms to music, which is appropriate, from Handel to Bach, Bernstein to the Maranatha Singers. It's too bad they did not have a system of musical notation surviving from David's time, as I would love to hear the melodies of these songs. I guess I will have to wait until I get to Heaven, where we will ALL be able to read music!

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

This is what the Lord says to you: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s. ...Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the Lord will be with you.’” (2 Chronicles 20)

My Pleasure.

I never know what I am going to write about until the morning I format the thread and pray about it. The Lord put the recent death of this intellectual giant onto my heart as we embarked on the Book of Psalms, which is not only in the canon of Judeo-Christian Scripture, but of Western Civilization itself.

I love the classics, especially Tolstoy and Melville, who were among Harold Bloom’s favorites as well.

And Western Civilization is trashed by the Left these days.

Yet, what makes it great is the Athens—Jerusalem union. The logic, art, science of the Greeks with the morality and revelation of the Judeo-Christian values.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Sorry about my absence today! We had a Nor'easter that knocked out power in my town and several surrounding areas for nearly 20 hours. No heat, no hot water, no fridge, no Internet, and worst of all, NO COFFEE! And on my birthday too. I am going away for the weekend, and will continue with our journey through "Music in the Bible" on Monday. See You Then!
