Is it legal to bring your Bible to school? Lawyers weigh in

Kids across the nation are set to bring their Bibles to school Thursday -- but is it legal to bring a Bible to public school? Is there a scenario where it's not legal?

Lawyers on both sides of the debate are weighing in ahead of "Bring Your Bible to School Day," sponsored by Focus on the Family, which reports that more than 650,000 students participated in the event last year.

"Well, of course, it is," says Jeremy Dys, special counsel for litigation and communications for First Liberty Institute, a legal organization dedicated to protecting religious liberty. "Students are not only allowed to bring their Bible to school. They're certainly allowed to read it during free time, in between classes, and even reference the Bible within their assignments and class discussions."

The best thing that happened to my daughter was a 3rd grade teacher telling her she could not use her bible for free reading time. From that day forward she never trusted her teachers,

Yet liberals and schools force the unholy Quran on students...

I’m either homeschooling or keeping my kids in the Philippines until college.

The Left believes that the First Amendment refers to “Freedom FROM religion”.

Freedom to express your religion is one of our God-given rights as stated in the First Amendment. It is non-negotiable.

The founders would be aghast at the godless indoctrination in today’s public schrewls. The Bible was a basic standard textbook of education in their era. There won’t be any Bibles in hell where these godless fools are on the one way train ride.

When I was a child in Public School in 1955, (NYS) the neighborhood priest would come to school and walk us to the church where we could have Religious Instructions.

It was absolutely stupid that he couldn't use a classroom, gym or whatever.

This was a wonderful dedicated priest who married my parents and Hubby and myself.

Muzzards are sure to be offended. Muzzardy makes a big deal out of discouraging the Faithful from reading the Bible. Why? Well, if you conduct a simultaneous reading of the Bible and the Koran the general incoherence of the latter shows right up. One fellow who converted to Christianity said it was due to reading the Bible which he described as ‘fascinating, generally intelligible, and a remarkable anthology of history, theology, philosophy, and wisdom. Whereas the Koran contains some badly retold Bible stories and a lot of obscurantic nonsense.’

When I was in the 5th grade, the Gideons gave everyone who wanted one, a new testament. I think everyone took up the offer.

I still have mine tho Mother had given me a Bible when I was 9.

Lots of people forget that a Bible is printed under FREEDOM OF THE PRESS, and Freedom of speech.

Correct. They even have a foundation by that name based in Madison, Wisconsin.

From revenues of less than $5 million annually, these jay-birds specialize in intimidation against local governments which have 10 Commandments monuments in public places, demanding their removal or face a lawsuit.

Most gutless localities give in to these demands. One in our area responded by giving away yard sign replicas, the cost of which was covered by contributions from several local Christian congregations. They backed off after the yard signs sprouted like mushrooms after a spring rain.

I think it’s a bit ironic, since many of them have Bible versions on their cell phones.
