IT IS FINISHED
The Gospel of John ^ | 85-90 AD | JOHN

Posted on 04/19/2019 12:04:49 PM PDT by ealgeone

28After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, to fulfill the Scripture, said, “I am thirsty.” 29A jar full of sour wine was standing there; so they put a sponge full of the sour wine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth.

30Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine,

He said, “It is finished!”

And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.

John 19:28-30

May God bless the reading of His Word.

“It is Finished!” is a term for victory used by a general at the end of the battle once the enemy has been vanquished. Very fitting, I would say.

Christ died so that we might live. Greater love has no man than this. It only proves that God is love and we are rebellious if we reject this love.

When very young, when I first heard this gospel, I thought ‘vinegar’ !!! (here sour wine) was the Romans being nasty to Jesus. But later, reading a little history, I learned that Roman soldiers (legions/auxiliaries) generally drank their water mixed with vinegar (usually made from low quality wine) as their normal drink (local water tastes bad or has germs which vinegar kills ... )

Here in this version they mention more clearly that the ‘sour wine’ was sitting there (crucifying is hard thirsty work) and they were simply giving him a drink of their water -— which would have been a little clearer than the more tersely worded version I heard as a kid.

From that perspective, it seems more an act of mercy on their part.

The Greek for Tetelestai.....

Also some interesting commentary on John 19:30 at the bottom of the page at the link....

https://biblehub.com/john/19-30.htm

(a) Before the darkness -

(1) “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34).

(2) “Today shalt thou be with me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43).

(3) “Woman, behold thy son:... behold thy mother!” (John 19:26).

(b) During the darkness -

(4) “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46; Mark 15:34).

(c) After the darkness -

(5) “I thirst” (John 19:28).

(6) “It is finished!” (John 19:30).

(7) “Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit” (Luke 23:46).

From Monsignor Pope’s essay for today:

“It is three o’clock in the afternoon; a great silence is upon the earth. The Word of God has died in the flesh. He has gone among the dead to awaken them.”
