China and Vatican strike controversial deal over bishops; China now has a say on appointments

In a controversial move, China and the Vatican are preparing to sign a landmark deal this month allowing each side a voice in choosing the church's bishops in China, reports the Wall Street Journal.

The details: Pope Francis will recognize excommunicated Chinese bishops that were approved without the Vatican's green light, and China will acknowledge the Pope as leader of the nation's Catholics and allow the Vatican a voice in bishop selection moving forward. The deal comes with controversy as China's current regime is largely atheist and authoritarian. The agreement is also seen as China recognizing religious autonomy — something the government has notably refused to do in the past. However, WSJ notes the deal "could still fall through or be delayed due to unforeseen events."

While Pope Francis battles rare criticism from senior clergy in the Vatican, he’s facing a warning that the Roman Catholic Church risks devastating division from Asia.

Cardinal Joseph Zen — the retired but still outspoken former archbishop of Hong Kong — told Bloomberg News last month that he wrote to Francis to denounce efforts by the Vatican to reach a landmark agreement with Beijing on the appointment of bishops in China. Zen cautioned in a July letter that such a deal, which could lift a barrier to restoring diplomatic relations with Beijing, may also create a schism among the local faithful.

“Francis is too optimistic,” said Zen, 86. “The trouble is that he doesn’t know the Chinese government. He doesn’t have experience of a Communist regime.”

This may not be a bad idea. How about Francis agreeing that our President Trump gets to have a say in who gets to be a Bishop, Archbishop and Cardinal. Things can only get better than the mess we have now. Yes, let Donald Trump have a final Yes or No vote on every one that Francis picks. I do suspect there would be a boatload full of vetoes.

China... you mean the country currently shutting down churches and having believers sign documents recanting Christ? Oh yeah... this idea is great.

Well, that’s what Henry VIII wanted to do: have a national church.

Plus get a divorce.

Questions: What is the Chinese government’s position on homos & pedophiles? How do the Chinese people feel about them?

RE: What is the Chinese government’s position on homos & pedophiles?

They are ambivalent about it. But like Russia, I don;t think they take public displays too kindly. I have not seen any gay pride marches in China at all.

But why the question? The Catholic church officially calls the homosexual lifestyle a sin.
