Matthew 16

The Demand for a Sign

16 The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven.

2 He replied, “When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’ 3 and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.[a] 4 A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.” Jesus then left them and went away.

The Yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees

5 When they went across the lake, the disciples forgot to take bread. 6 “Be careful,” Jesus said to them. “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”

7 They discussed this among themselves and said, “It is because we didn’t bring any bread.”

8 Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, “You of little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread? 9 Do you still not understand? Don’t you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered? 10 Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered? 11 How is it you don’t understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 12 Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

Jesus often spoke in parables, using common things to teach eternal lessons. Here, he compare false teaching to yeast, which invades a whole lump of dough. One of the things about bread that has been leavened is that it is puffed up, full of hot air, and quite tasty and tempting. Unleavened bread is not nearly as inviting! So it is with false teaching. It often seems much more palatable than the plain truth.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The mobile home down the street from me had been occupied for many years by a poor widow who could not afford to keep it up. Jim, a friend of mine bought the unit, and, as a qualified contractor, determined to totally renovate it and rent it out for a nice profit. He had already had great success with another home in the park, so this one would be a cinch!

As time wore on, he realized that it was not going to be so easy. When the record-breaking Winter of 2014 left ten feet of snow on top of the mobile home, helpful neighbors had shoveled it off, but broke off all the appropriate vent pipes in the process. This allowed water to seep in between the walls and grow mold. I said to Jim, "Hey Jim, there are whole Chapters in Leviticus about that stuff! You're gonna have to burn the place down!"

Of course, Jim knows the proper treatments that will eliminate the problem, but the job has been delayed and will cost a lot more than he had planned.

Yeast, Leavening, and Mold are famous for spreading, once they get started. They bubble and froth, produce gasses that ferment beer, wine, and cheese, and will continue to do so until the process is stopped or the host completely consumed.

Jesus uses the concept of Yeast when speaking of false teachings that can infect and ruin a person's faith. These false teachings grow and consume the original Faith and become an end in and of themselves. It could be legalism, false asceticism, or their polar opposites, licentiousness and lawlessness, but, ANYTHING that detracts from the purity of the Gospel ends up growing a life of its own.

Wow! That looks exactly like the sourdough loaf that my hubby made the other day! It’s tasty but the crust is like cement...not his fault; it’s supposed to be. LOL! It rises in a basket that has a fancy french name and that gives it the ribbed texture.

Mold is nasty stuff.

A house a few blocks from where I live was abandoned after a nasty divorce. The wife left the water on — for a week. Mold followed. It was a health hazard. Finally, a contractor who specializes in rehabbing meth houses cleaned it up. It’s on the market again.
