Speaker Paul Ryan Gives House Chaplain His Job Back

Fr Conroy was reinstated after a letter he wrote to Ryan became public

Jesuit Father Patrick Conroy, chaplain for the U.S. House of Representatives who said he had been forced to resign, was reinstated to his post by House Speaker Paul Ryan on May 3.

The priest was reinstated after a letter he wrote to Ryan, R-Wisconsin, became public. In the letter, Fr Conroy said he wished to retract his resignation letter and continue working during this Congress “and beyond.”

“I have never been disciplined, nor reprimanded, nor have I ever heard a complaint about my ministry during my time as House Chaplain,” his letter said. He also mentioned displeasure that Ryan hadn’t spoken to him directly but had his chief of staff ask for his resignation.

In a statement, Ryan said his original decision was made with what he thought was in the best interest of the House, but he now decided that “a protracted fight over such an important post” would not be good for the body and so he accepted the priest’s letter and decided he could remain in his position.

Ryan, who is Catholic, is expected to meet Father Conroy on May 8 when the House is back in session.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-California, said she welcomed Ryan’s decision to let Conroy remain as chaplain.

“However, many distressing questions must still be answered about the motivations behind Father Conroy’s unwarranted and unjust dismissal,” she said.

Perhaps his opposition to the moral concerns of conservatives in Congress is an issue.

The entire episode speaks volumes about the quality of leadership under Speaker Ryan and, more importantly, Ryan’s ability to document the basis for his decisions.

Ryan the Wisconsin wienie.

Weak performance, Paul Ryan. Very weak! You couldn’t even make your first decision, (a good one) stick.
If you want to get rid of such an employee, you must document that you spoke with him about the problem and gave him an opportunity to change, based on new training. That’s in Management 101. This reverend is a good mouthpiece for the Dems, so they have coached him on what to do. You didn’t see any of that coming, Paul?

He doesn’t pray in the name of Jesus. Kick him out. And I’m Catholic.

Louis Foxwell :" Perhaps his opposition to the moral concerns of conservatives in Congress is an issue."

Perhaps,..
But it is interesting and foreboding of an ill wind in the Congress.
I question what the real motivation was requesting the resignation in the first place by PRyan.

If anything proves Paul Ryan is a foul piece of human debris, this is it.

With so many other priorities, “Paul Fires Priest” was the winning headline Ryan chased.

His respect index is -12.

Quite. He’s either too vain or too cowardly to make decisions and live by them.

Makes PRyan look even weaker. Maybe he can be chief of staff to upcoming Sen. Mitt Romney.

Doe anybody know what the general prayer is for any chaplain? In other words, is it an ecumencical prayer so as not to offend anyone?
