NeoCons, McCain & Kristol want the million or so Syrian Christians to be Shoahed because they dont like Israel.Pretend they're Mexicans.
The fruitcakes have been coming out of the closet for two solid years, and it doesn't look like it's going to end anytime soon.

Liberation Theologian (Marxist) from South America. Doubtful another South American will be Pope for many years.

The Patriarchates of Antioch for the Greek Orthodox, Syrian Orthodox, and Greek-Melkite Catholic have been there opposing Western involvement all along.
Back in March 2003 --- here's a selection of examples (LINK)--- they came out unanimously against the invasion of Iraq. I remember Pope Benedict XVI going all-out to give these ancient churches a voice and hosting the patriarchs at conferences trying to get the attention of the Western politicians and press. To no avail.
Look at it from this perspective:
- The brutal dictators whom the USA and allies try to "take out" often turn out to be not as bad as the brutes who replace them. Saddam was bad but he kept back the Islamists. Ditto Assad.
- Any time anybody from the West kills any Muslims whomsoever --- no matter on which side --- the indigenous Christians get blamed for it. We drop the bombs: they get the blade to the throat.

This is not the Pope. This is the indigenous Orthodox.

This is not the Pope, per se. This is the Orthodox.
Assad is a monster. But if he goes, all the Christians will be butchered by the monsters who come after Assad. Just like in Iraq.
Bad as he is, Assad has maintained the survival of all the religious minorities: Druze, Alawi, Ismaili, and Shia; and the 10% of the Syrian population which is Christian, including Orthodox, Uniate, and Nestorian.
These Christian leaders are in Damascus. In Damascus. They know if they don't protest the bombing, they will not live to see the sun come up tomorrow.

They were Christians when our ancestors (yours and mine, probably) were worshipping oak trees in the barbarian continent of Europe. They have survived for 20 centuries, including 1400 years of dhimmitude under hostile Islamic powers. They have clung to Christ. Lived for Christ, died for Christ. And you say they are not Christian.
To: Mrs. Don-o
I guess its hard for me to understand how such devoted Christians can defend a mass murderer.
To: Midwesterner53
I don't think they are outright defending Assad "and all his works." They did make some points worth considering, (1) that the raid was contrary to international law; (2) that the gas attack --- who really did it, where and why --- has not been proven, and that (3) the bombing disrupts the official international investigation, which had barely begun.
Plenty of conservatives question this as well.
To: Pollard
I meant to say it was the future Pope Benedict -— Ratzinger -— with Pope John Paul II-— who made an all-out diplomatic effort to prevent the Iraq war in 2003.

Assad goes, and 2000 years of Christianity in Syria ENDS
This is what happened in IRak when the US moved in on Saddy.
Why would any American Christian want to do that to our brethren in Syria?
They cannot flee any more, they don't want to -- their ancestors have lived there for millenia

the 250K were killed because the Sauds and Qataris and Turks sponsoredjihadis to oust Assad
The USA looked aside, or, under McCain and Obama actively aided thejihadis
Leave Assad alone and the 250K deaths would not have happened -- Assad would have killed many, yes, he's definitely no saint, but without him, the death toll would be like Timur-e-Lang's (Tamerlane's) genocide of ME Christians (he killed 5% of humanity)

Sadly they may not have any choice but to do just that, flee.
If I am not mistaken, on the west coast, there is a number of Middle Eastern Christian communities.

There is a choice — and that is for the West to stop supporting the anti-Assad forces

I agree with you on that. Syria should have been left alone from the get go.
