Cardinal Cupich: ‘Evangelization’ Doesn’t Mean Converting Jews to Catholicism

GLENCOE, Illinois, March 12, 2018 (LifeSiteNews) – Quoting Pope Francis, Chicago Cardinal Blase Cupich said “proselytism” is a “sin” that the Catholic Church has “not always avoided.”

Cupich said this during a speech on Catholic-Jewish relations at the North Shore Congregation Israel synagogue on January 29, 2018. The synagogue advertises on its website, “We are interfaith. We are LGBTQ.”

Cupich discussed the Jewish and Catholic importance of maintaining “tradition” while simultaneously criticizing the Church’s previous “ridiculous” tradition of limiting mixed-religion marriages, invoked the late Cardinal Joseph Bernardin’s “consistent ethic of life” that equates intrinsic evils with societal ills, and warned against his definition of religious “identity politics.”

He expressed support for Jewish parents passing on the Jewish faith to their children and Catholic parents passing on the Catholic faith to their children.

The cardinal discussed his initiative to “renew the Church” and the “new evangelization,” which he said cannot be taken to mean the dismissal of the Second Vatican Council’s ambiguities on ecumenism. He also apologized to those present for any “distressful and hostile attitudes” or “deception” they may have experienced from Catholics.

He said the “renewal” of the Church can be done by “returning to roots of traditions” but also condemned the traditional Catholic approach of converting people of other religions to Catholicism.

Discussing the “sin” of “proselytism,” Cupich said:

Thank heaven Paul and Peter thought it was important to preach to the Jews AND the Gentiles, even before people who believed got the nickname Christians.

North Shore Congregation Israel. So Reform, it’s closed on the holidays. They probably serve shrimp and bacon in the oneg after services, or would, if they’re not closed.

This Roman knows what Our King commanded when He established His physical, visible Church on earth.

When one of His holy ordained clergyman (in the primary church within His One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic Church) is THIS disobedient to The King, that holy ordained clergyman should be shunned and ignored until he truly repents.

I blame Cupich for so much.

Would it be too hard for the good Cardinal to read the Book of Acts before he runs his mouth?

Quoting Pope Francis, Chicago Cardinal Blase Cupich said “proselytism” is a “sin” that the Catholic Church has “not always avoided.”

"Sadly, mission efforts by Catholics and some other Christian communities have not always avoided these sins. There have been times when human and financial support have been tied to conversion. Other times, conversion was required through the force of state power or ecclesial power. Still others, and even in our day, deception is found in the presentation of Christianity to others. Often this means presenting only the positive elements of one’s religion in contrast to the weaknesses of the other. Again, we have to admit, frankly, that Catholics have not been free from such attitudes and actions."

    Proselytism coercing conversion through
  1. Money
  2. Violence
  3. Deception

Evangelism is not the same thing as “proselytism”.

Convert all the Jews you can. Then tell Cardinal Cupich all about it in lengthy, descriptive letters.

I want Jews to go to Heaven. I even hope Cupich goes to Heaven.

We are leaderless at this time. These boys are simply a political action committee.

They have no particular use for Sacred Scripture, and seriously despise both the authentic Magisterium and certainly, Tradition. The three pillars of teaching are being openly betrayed.

He may never have done that before. When I was changing from Catholic to Lutheran and reading the Bible, my Catholic co-workers at our Catholic hospital asked why I was doing that!

I’m sure he went to Mass daily during the Easter season., at least as a seminarian. If you do, you’ll hear Acts.

This is the command of every Christian; to save souls. Well done, friend.

Messianic Judaism is acknowledging that Jesus Christ is their Lord and Savior and the Messiah of Israel. This should be what the Catholic Church wants in the Great Commission.

Messyonic "judaism" is NOT Judaism. It is a cult preying on the poorly educated Jew who doesn't know Judaism very well and is therefore vulnerable to someone telling them untruths. Messyonic "judaism" does not in any way speak for actual Jews, since it's made up of mostly non-Jews. So crowing that Messyonic "judaism" acknowledges anything is absolutely meaningless as far as actual Jews are concerned. Catholics have their beliefs, and fine. Jews have their own beliefs, and don't require tenets from other religions.

I know a former Jew who called himself a Messianic Jew. He is now a Christian minister.

It should mean going in to all the world to preach the Gospel.

The first followers of Jesus were Jewish, and they didn’t view their actions/faith as “un-Jewish”. They believed He was the Son of God they’d been expecting (as Jews) for thousands of years. They had a succession of prophets proclaiming He would come, and after He came there were no more prophets. My understanding is that Messianic Jews simply looked back and understood why the prophets stopped coming.

These are clearly words of a man who does not believe the Gospel.

It was a much cleaner deal when Peter and Paul were still alive. The original “Holy Roman Catholic Church” was much more Biblical and far less encumbered by hundreds of man-inspired self-aggrandizing caveats much in form of the Pharisees who thought it important to look special instead of being special....they did to the HRCC (Uh-oh - just noticed that the initials are very similar to an unflattering POS) what politicians did to the Constitution/Nation.
