‘Non Serviam’: Sale of Shuttered Convent Recalls Sisters’ Revolt

Immaculate Heart of Mary Sisters destroyed by humanistic psychology

LOS ANGELES (ChurchMilitant.com) - Fifty years after breaking apart over defiance of their bishop, the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM) is nearing its end.

For the past few years, the Tinseltown press has kept industry watchers abreast of the ongoing fight over the sisters' former convent in the exclusive L.A. district of Los Feliz.

On one side are two of the five sisters who remain with the order, who have tried to sell the estate to Southern California businesswoman Dana Hollister. On the other, the archdiocese of Los Angeles, which is fighting to sell the property to pop singer Katy Perry.

In her original 2015 bid, Perry offered the archdiocese $14.5 million for the convent, which had been shuttered four years earlier. But the two sisters who remained living on site didn't take to Perry (whom the sisters accused of selling her soul to the devil) and instead tried to sell the estate to Hollister, who eventually offered $30 million.

In March, a judge ruled the archdiocese held rights to the estate and Perry was awarded legal control.

Last week, the Hollywood Reporter announced the latest twist: The sisters are appealing to the Apostolic Signatura (the Vatican supreme court), "challenging whether the archdiocese has authority over the property and the order itself."

The case has made good fodder for headlines and gossip columns. But for committed Catholics, the backstory is far more important, as it points to a deeper issue. The real story is the collapse of the sister's once-blossoming order under the banner of post-Vatican II "renewal."

As E. Michael Jones documents in his 1999 study, "Carl Rogers and the IHM nuns," even before the end of the Second Vatican Council, it seemed.....

My oldest sister was a Catholic nun her whole adult life. Her orders’s tiff with our diocese over our light in the loafers Rembert Weakland OSB was a thing to behold.

I remember back in the nineties, the Pope made an appearance in NYC, I think it was. There was a convent upstate that wanted to sacrifice something to honor the papal visit. They decided their sacrifice was to not go see the Pope. Sometimes we overthink things.

Why would godless, Hillary & 0bama @ss-kisser Katy Perry even WANT this property?

Won’t she melt or be turned into a pillar of salt when she steps foot onto it? ;)

I had a pastor who once warned us that psychology was replacing the confessional. He had lived through the 60’s and seen the devastation of loss of love for God and His Word.

Our fallen nature needs to recognize our supernatural need for God’s words and ask him for his forgiveness.

My pastor said the confessional is no cost and soul freeing. Seeing a psychologist can be costly in both dollars and broken souls.

Oh, my, what a tragedy is outlined in the article. As California went, so went the nation, it seems. All Christians must reassert the primacy of God as the transcendent moral authority. And so must all Americans, if we are to remain a Constitutional nation Under God.

Humanistic psychology tore through the convents in the 1960's - 70's. Hit them like the plague, emptied them out and killed them. Literally tens of thousands of women left their missions as educators and healers. Sisters went from over 180,000 (1965) to about 55,000 (today). Present average age something like 75.

The splendid, Christ-honoring institutions set up by our sainted 19th century nun-foundresses bit the dust. Catholic schools by the hundreds closed or went secular; used-to-be Catholic women's colleges merged with the men's colleges and set up secular boards of incorporation. Look up "Land 'o Lakes Declaration" -- it was set in stone by 1967. Catholic hospitals --- Kyrie eleison 40x.

Can it change? It can. But I expect it will have to spend a season in the grave.

So sad. When I lived among Italian-Americans in a large city parish, the old-timers were filled with respect for the nuns of their school days, and the ones who helped watch their chldren if they had to go to work. I was able to employ a wonderful Medical Mission sister for my own child, who by that time (the 90s) was living in an apartment and doing childcare for a meagre living. I also had a group of sisters who ran a hospital as clients. The Sixties drove the contemplation, life of prayer, spiritual education and testimony out of the work of nuns and destroyed so much.
