Kiev, November 16, Interfax - The Ukrainian parliament on Thursday approved changes to the Labor Code by adding Catholic Christmas, December 25, and removing May 2 from its list of national public holidays and non-business days.
The changes to Article 73 of the Code of Labor Laws were backed by 238 people's deputies in attendance.
"With the passage of this bill, Christmas will be marked in Ukraine twice: on December 25, according to the Gregorian calendar, and on January 7, according to the Julian one," Lyudmila Denisova (People's Front), head of the parliamentary committee on social policy, said during debate on the bill.
People's deputies voted for the legal initiative while bearing in mind an amendment, proposed by Speaker Andrey Parubiy, to remove May 2 from the list of public holidays.
May 1, Labor Day, will remain a public holiday.
The law comes enters into effect the day after publication.
Cool!
Since the fall of the Soviet Union, Ukraine has been stuck in this awkward stalemate between its Soviet past while being introduced to the external trappings of Western capitalism (McDonalds, etc....) but ever since the “Crimea” wakeup call by way of Putinist aggression — Ukraine has now solidified its Euroward direction. Lenin statues all demolished. Now they undergo “Westernization” in the truest sense...by way of spiritual discovery. And: all this while maintaining Orthodox soul.
A true bridge between East and West.
It will be a bumpy road, but soon I believe the political and economic blessings will follow. I pray they become a thriving, democratic, prosperous, free nation.
Russia has yet to take to choose its destiny. With Putin they are trying Soviet/Empire revivalism...yeah we’ll see how that goes.
This is great news.
