I realize that it’s no sin to be rich and I don’t think he was claiming that.
I think his point was what you made, that it’s the temptations that are the problem.
And because being rich isn’t a sin, then people are less aware of the problems with the temptations involved with money. Same as with food and drinking. While it’s widely recognized that over drinking is wrong, since eating is necessary for survival and given to us by God, part of His design, then there are the dangers of over eating.
I actually had a Baptist once tell me that Baptists eat so much cause it’s the only thing they can do that’s not a sin. And he was at least 80 pounds overweight. Didn’t seem to occur to him that gluttony was also a sin. And so the temptation got him.
We all have out specific weaknesses where we struggle with temptation.
I have a friend who was a compulsive gambler and for him it’s a sin.
Never was a problem for me. I don’t have the least little desire to gamble.
Just what I needed this morning. Thank you.
You’re welcome.
I wasn’t sure about the reaction to this topic as it’s not what you usually see coming from the pulpit, but I thought he made some valid points.

This verse just came to me....
Proverbs 30:7-9 Two things I ask of you; deny them not to me before I die: Remove far from me falsehood and lying; give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that is needful for me, lest I be full and deny you and say, Who is the Lord? or lest I be poor and steal and profane the name of my God.
One of my favorite websites.
Not very well known either.
I’m just curious as to why John McAuthur used the word porn in the tittle of his essay when it wasn’t about porn.
I think whether or not it is a problem, gambling would be considered sinful due to the fact that you’re coveting what others have?
This isn’t from MacArthur.
I think the point of the article is that the temptation involved in desiring or coveting wealth is as dangerous and addictive as porn.
We tend to think of porn as about the worst thing out there, but the desire for wealth and the pursuit of it, can become all consuming.
I look at the word of faith movement with the health, wealth, and prosperity teaching and I know a number of Christians who have that as the focus in their lives and don’t seem to be aware of the subtle dangers of wealth.
Ah. I see.
I still think porn is a weird reference though.
Maybe because of how addictive it is and how widespread.
Maybe shock value.
If he compared it to drugs or alcohol, people who aren’t struggling with those issues may think they are above it.
I don’t know.
You could email him and ask him.
