FULL TITLE: How a one-in-400million disability became common in a tiny polygamist Mormon town after generations of inbreeding

A polygamist Mormon enclave on the Arizona-Utah border is seeing more and more children being born with an extremely rare disorder that causes severe mental and physical retardation.

Dr. Theodore Tarby, who specialized in rare childhood diseases, first discovered the problem in 1990, when a woman in the community brought her 10-year-old son to him.

The boy had unusual facial features, such as a prominent forehead, low-set ears, widely-spaced eyes and a small jaw. He was also severely physically and mentally disabled.

Dr. Tarby was stumped as to what condition the boy had until he sent a urine sample out for analysis.

That test came back position for fumarase deficiency, an extremely rare disorder that impacts the metabolism.

Fumarase deficiency happens when a person lacks the enzyme fumarase which helps drive energy to cells. It has the most severe impact on the brain, which takes up about 20 per cent of the body's energy.

Children who have it are missing parts of their brain, can't sit or stand without help, and often suffer from seizures. Their language skills are minimal and their IQ is usually around 25.

At that time, Dr. Tarby believed there were only 13 cases in the world, making the odds of having it about one in 400 million. But he soon discovered that his patient's sister, who was believed to suffer from cerebal palsy, also had the disease.

Dr. Tarby started working with the community after that and diagnosed eight more cases, in children ranging in age from 20 months to 12 years old.

All of the patients had the same facial characteristics, and most couldn't walk or even sit up.

The similarities between Mormonism and Islam are numerous. “Under the Banner of Heaven” is a book about the weird Mormon communities and how “young boys are often kicked out so that a select few men can have an excess of wives.” Birth defects are common. Very selfish and sad.

The similarities between Mormonism and Islam are numerous.

I've felt this, largely on the superficial connection of the desert existence, although much seems to follow.

Well, "with malice towards none" ... I can only lament these misfortunes.

Every normal human being possesses the (recessive) genes for a couple dozen different "1-in-400-million" hereditary conditions.

That doesn't matter - because of the low statistical probability of his/her mate also possessing those same genes.

Rather, one's mate usually possesses (recessive) genes for a couple dozen entirely different conditions.

Except in cases of inbreeding - then otherwise rare conditions become rapidly common.

Regards,

Eventually the community is going to die out, as there is pretty much nothing in the way of new blood there.

I have seen other articles at FR that pointed out that because Islamic society make it very difficult for boys and girls to meet and form marriages, that often first and second cousins ended up getting married as they only had opportunities to meet each other. This is a danger in any insular society.

People who think that polygamy is somehow God's will need to explain why boys and girls are still born in roughly equal numbers.

Its interbreeding with aliens I tell you.

In breading does them no favors either.

Diagnosis - inbreeding

Cure for those already born with heredity problems - none.

Cure for the future - abandon the community, leave, at once, and get out in the world and marry someone from outside the exclusive community.

It make take a few generations to reach the same problem level of “siblings & first cousins” but after awhile nearly all small exclusive communities develop inbreeding problems.

Depends on the type of bread. Those with celiac disease need to eat only gluten-free bread.

Those with a proven wheat allergy will need to look for bread made with soy flour, rice flour, etc.

For everybody else, wheat bread will be OK -- but for maximum health benefits, it should be 100% whole grain.

(And don't fall for the "multi-grain" hoax. If the nutrition label refers to enriched wheat flour, you're not getting the true whole grain product.)

The reason for Islamic inbreeding comes from two factors. The first is mawr (bride price ) The prospective husband needs to come up with a large sum of money. Officially, this is property of the bride in case of divorce. In reality, the bride’s family holds onto it. There is thus an incentive to marry your father’s siblings child, so the money stays in the clan.

The second factor is the clan structure of Islamic society. Marriages between members of different clans disrupt clan loyalties.

>> Cure for the future <<

A policy of deliberate racial miscegenation certainly would help. Maybe it would even eliminate the problem altogether in one generation.

Specifically, bring in a bunch of nubile Mormon youngsters from Africa and/or Asia and arrange marriages between them and the local kids. No local kid allowed to marry another local kid.

Still, something tells me this policy ain’t gonna win favor in rural Utah.

So back to the drawing boards?

Obviously not, at least not the single dip types like tempura. I would probably start with milk, then seasoned flour, an egg wash then panko crumbs. More work but the results are worth it.

My idea is simple and you take it to a totally unnecessary extreme.

Even in the earliest days, and just in the “northern” colonies alone, the population provided enough genetic diversity to prevent the inbreeding that has occurred in the small isolated Mormon community.

Wait a minute people, now don`t get excited, is this fact or just picking?

If there is any truth to it how did Abraham`s off spring turn out so well? how did they turn out to be Gods chosen people?

Abraham and Sarah must have been even closer related than cousins, maybe half sibling?

It is amazing how people will claim they believe in the scripture but will put them behind any worldly views.

That is why James tells us i will show you my faith by my works, because works do not lie but the tongue does lie, faster than a horse can trot.

I will not flat out deny the article but i would suggest you read your Bible, instead of letting some doctor of religion tell you what it says.

“The similarities between Mormonism and Islam are numerous.”

The Amish (the real Amish this time) have had this problem in the past. Unlike the FLDS and Muslims however they sought help from hospitals about it and were told what caused it. As a result they now go to find mates from other Amish communities, sometimes even from several states away.
