Friday of the Thirteenth Week in Ordinary Time


Reading 1 Gn 23:1-4, 19; 24:1-8, 62-67

The span of Sarah's life was one hundred and twenty-seven years.
She died in Kiriatharba (that is, Hebron)
in the land of Canaan,
and Abraham performed the customary mourning rites for her.
Then he left the side of his dead one and addressed the Hittites:
"Although I am a resident alien among you,
sell me from your holdings a piece of property for a burial ground,
that I may bury my dead wife."

After the transaction, Abraham buried his wife Sarah
in the cave of the field of Machpelah,
facing Mamre (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan.

Abraham had now reached a ripe old age,
and the LORD had blessed him in every way.
Abraham said to the senior servant of his household,
who had charge of all his possessions:
"Put your hand under my thigh,
and I will make you swear by the LORD,
the God of heaven and the God of earth,
that you will not procure a wife for my son
from the daughters of the Canaanites among whom I live,
but that you will go to my own land and to my kindred
to get a wife for my son Isaac."
The servant asked him:
"What if the woman is unwilling to follow me to this land?
Should I then take your son back to the land from which you migrated?"
"Never take my son back there for any reason," Abraham told him.
"The LORD, the God of heaven,
who took me from my father's house and the land of my kin,
and who confirmed by oath the promise he then made to me,
'I will give this land to your descendants'–
he will send his messenger before you,
and you will obtain a wife for my son there.
If the woman is unwilling to follow you,
you will be released from this oath.
But never take my son back there!"

A long time later, Isaac went to live in the region of the Negeb.
One day toward evening he went out . . . in the field,
and as he looked around, he noticed that camels were approaching.
Rebekah, too, was looking about, and when she saw him,
she alighted from her camel and asked the servant,
"Who is the man out there, walking through the fields toward us?"
"That is my master," replied the servant.
Then she covered herself with her veil.

The servant recounted to Isaac all the things he had done.
Then Isaac took Rebekah into his tent;
he married her, and thus she became his wife.
In his love for her, Isaac found solace
after the death of his mother Sarah.

"Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?"
He heard this and said,
"Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do.
Go and learn the meaning of the words,
I desire mercy, not sacrifice.
I did not come to call the righteous but sinners."

Abraham Buys the Cave of Mach-pelah

rose up from before his dead, and said to the Hittites, “I am a stranger and a so-
journer among you; give me property among you for a burying place, that I may
bury my dead out of my sight.”

lah east of Mamre (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan.

The Marriage of Isaac


[1] Now Abraham was old, well advanced in years; and the Lord had blessed
Abraham in all things. [2] And Abraham said to his servant, the oldest of his
house, who had charge of all that he had, “Put your hand under my thigh, [3]
and I will make you swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and of the earth, that
you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among
whom I dwell, [4] but will go to my country and to my kindred, and take a wife for
my son Isaac.” [5] The servant said to him, “Perhaps the woman may not be wil-
ling to follow me to this land; must I then take your son back to the land from
which you came?” [6] Abraham said to him, “See to it that you do not take my
son back there. [7] The Lord, the God of heaven, who took me from my father’s
house and from the land of my birth, and who spoke to me and swore to me, ‘To
your descendants I will give this land,’ he will send his angel before you, and you
shall take a wife for my son from there. [8] But if the woman is not willing to fol-
low you, then you will be free form this oath of mine; only you must not take my
son back there.”

The Meeting between Rebekah and Isaac (Continuation)


[62] Now Isaac had come from Beer-Iahai-roi, and was dwelling in the Negeb.
[63] And Isaac went out to meditate in the field in the evening; and he lifted up his
eyes and looked, and behold, there were camels coming. [64] And Rebekah lifted
up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she alighted from the camel, [65] and said
to the servant, “Who is the man yonder, walking in the field to meet us?” The ser-
vant said, “It is my master.” So she took her veil and covered herself. [66] And the
servant told Isaac all the things that he had done. [67] Then Isaac brought her into
the tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her. So Isaac
was comforted after his mother’s death.

Commentary:

23:1-20. The story of Abraham ends, strictly speaking, with the episode, which
shows the initial fulfillment of God’s promise of the land to Abraham. By acquiring
a sepulchre and a small plot, he ceases to be a mere resident alien and acquires
rights over this country.

The style of the account and the courtesy conventions used, as well as the con-
tract of sale, indicate, by their similarity to Hittite customs, the antiquity of this
event. The Hittites, or sons of Heth, carved out a huge empire in Asia Minor in the
second millennium BC. It is not easy to explain their presence in Canaan in Abra-
ham’s time, unless it was that small isolated groups of Hittites lived there. Or it
could be that all non-Semites living in the country were loosely referred to as “Hit-
tites”. In any event, what the passage does show is that even during Abraham’s
lifetime the promise begins to be fulfilled, though by purchase and scarcely more
than in a symbolic way. This is very much in contrast with God’s later outright gift
of the entire land to Abraham’s descendants.

23:19. In this same spot were buried Abraham, Isaac, Rebekah, Leah and Jacob,
so it became as it were a symbol to the Israelites of the fact that this was their
land, even during their time in Egypt. A mosque today stands on the spot which
tradition assigns to the tomb of the patriarchs, venerated by Jews, Christians and
Moslems.

24:1-67. Isaac’s marriage is narrated before Abraham’s death to underline the con-
tinuity between the story of Abraham and that of Isaac. The next stage of the his-
tory of the patriarchs will focus on the sons of Rebekah—Esau and Jacob (cf. 25:
19ff). Apparently Isaac and Abraham are no longer based at Mamre (cf. 23:19),
but more to the south, in the Negeb desert (cf. 24:62).

This account is very much in line with the context and customs of the patriarchal
period, but its style is more artistic and it has a particularly discreet way of descri-
bing God’s intervention. The story is told in five scenes and five dialogues, inter-
leaved with short narrative notes. In the first scene Abraham and his servant ap-
pear (vv. 1-9); in the second, the servant and Rebekah (vv. 10-28); in the third, in
Rebekah’s house, the servant and Laban (vv. 29-53); in the fourth, at the moment
of parting, Rebekah and her family (54-61); and in the fifth, Rebekah, the servant
and Isaac (vv. 62-67). The narrator seems to savor these vignettes and dialogues.
As regards God’s intervention, it should be noted that, although it is never obvi-
ous, he is still really the protagonist, because he is providentially steering the
course of events.

24:1-9. The tone of this passage suggests that Abraham feels he is nearing his
end and he can see that God’s promise with regard to his descendants and the
land is being kept. Therefore the patriarch is concerned to find a wife for his son
from among his own family, in line with the customs of semi-nomadic peoples of
that time. However, Abraham is clearly adamant that Isaac shall not give up li-
ving where he is. The form of oath, with the hand under the thigh (cf. 47:29),
which Abraham makes his servant take, an exceptionally strong one: it obliges
the servant, whose faithfulness is evident, to do exactly what he swears to do.
Here, once again, Abraham’s faith copes with all the difficulties his servant fore-
sees. He is fully confident that God in his providence will sweep away all these
obstacles, which is what happens, as one can gather from the end of the ac-
count.

Abraham’s decision about the wife Isaac should take points to the importance a
wife has in sustaining her husband’s faith and that of her family. St Ambrose com-
ments that “often a woman’s seduction deceives even the strongest of husbands
and causes them to give up religion. [...] For the first thing that should be sought
in conjugal life is religion. [...] Learn, therefore, what to seek in a woman: Abra-
ham sought not gold or silver or property, but the gift of a good heart” (”De Abra-
ham”, 1, 9, 84-85).

24:66-67. In the beautiful conclusion to the story (”He loved her and so was com-
forted after his mother’s death”) we see borne out the words of Genesis 2:24 a-
bout the creation of Eve: “A man leaves his father and his mother and cleaves to
his wife, and they become one flesh.” Jewish and Christian tradition see the mar-
riage of Isaac and Rebekah as a model of conjugal love.

[14] Then the disciples of John (the Baptist) came to Him (Jesus), saying, “Why
do we and the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?” [15] And Jesus
said them, “Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with
them? The days will come, when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and
then they will fast.” [16] And no one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old gar-
ment, for the patch tears away from the garment, and a worse tear is made. [17]
Neither is new wine put into old wineskins; if it is, the skins burst, and the wine
is spilled, and the skins are destroyed; but new wine is put into fresh wineskins,
and so both are preserved.”

Commentary:

14-17. This passage is interesting, not so much because it tells us about the
sort of fasting practised by the Jews of the time — particularly the Pharisees
and John the Baptist’s disciples — but because of the reason Jesus gives for not
requiring His disciples to fast in that way. His reply is both instructive and pro-
phetic. Christianity is not a mere mending or adjusting of the old suit of Judaism.
The redemption wrought by Jesus involves a total regeneration. Its spirit is too
new and too vital to be suited to old forms of penance, which will no longer apply.

We know that in our Lord’s time Jewish theology schools were in the grip of a
highly complicated casuistry to do with fasting, purifications, etc., which smo-
thered the simplicity of genuine piety. Jesus’ words point to that simplicity of
heart with which His disciples might practise prayer, fasting and almsgiving (cf.
Matthew 6:1-18 and notes to same). From apostolic times onwards it is for the
Church, using the authority given it by our Lord to set out the different forms
fasting should take in different periods and situations.

15. “The wedding guests”: literally, “the sons of the house where the wedding
is being celebrated”—an expression meaning the bridegroom’s closest friends.
This is an example of how St. Matthew uses typical Semitic turns of phrase,
presenting Jesus’ manner of speech.

This “house” to which Jesus refers has a deeper meaning; set beside the para
ble of the guests at the wedding (Matthew 22:1 ff), it symbolizes the Church as
the house of God and the body of Christ: “Moses was faithful in all God’s house
as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, but Christ was
faithful over God’s house as a son. And we are His house if we hold fast our
confidence and pride in our hope” (Hebrews 3:5-6).

The second part of the verse refers to the violent death Jesus would meet.

We thank you, God our Father, for those who have responded to your call to priestly ministry.

Accept this prayer we offer on their behalf: Fill your priests with the sure knowledge of your love.

Open their hearts to the power and consolation of the Holy Spirit.

Pray a Rosary each day for our nation.

1. Sign of the Cross: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

2. The Apostles Creed: I BELIEVE in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from there He shall come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

3. The Lord's Prayer: OUR Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

4. (3) Hail Mary: HAIL Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now, and in the hour of our death. Amen. (Three times)

5. Glory Be: GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

6. Fatima Prayer: Oh, my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to heaven, especially those in most need of your mercy.

Announce each mystery, then say 1 Our Father, 10 Hail Marys, 1 Glory Be and 1 Fatima prayer. Repeat the process with each mystery.

End with the Hail Holy Queen:
Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope! To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve! To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears! Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy towards us; and after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus!

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary! Pray for us, O holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

July Devotion: The Precious Blood 
Like the Sacred Wounds of Jesus, His Precious Blood deserves special honor because of its close relation to the Sacred Passion. That honor was given to it from the beginning by the Apostles who praised its redeeming power. (Rom. 5:9 "we are justified by His blood"; Heb. 13:12 "and so Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people by His blood, suffered outside the gate"; 1 John 1:7 "and the blood of Jesus Christ, His Son, cleanses us from all sin.") 
The Church has always held devotion to the Precious Blood in high esteem. We continue to recognize and publicly acknowledge the profound indebtedness of the whole human race to Christ, Priest and Victim. 
Standing at the foot of the cross, we see Jesus' head, hands, feet, and side pouring out streams of precious blood. It is precious because it: 
•      Redeems us and atones for our sins. Through His precious blood we are reconciled to God, made one with Him. Death ceases to be death and heaven's gates are opened to us.  
•      Cleanses us from all sin.  
•      Preserves us and keeps us safe from the grasp of evil.  When the Father sees us washed in the Blood of the Lamb we are spared.  
•      Comforts us. It is the constant reminder that Jesus - true God and true man suffered and died to save us and to open heaven to us because He loves us.  
•      Sanctifies us.  The same blood that justifies by taking away sin, continues to work within us.  Its action gives us the grace to continue on the path toward the Kingdom of God.  It assists us in achieving our new nature, leading us onward in subduing sin and in following the commands of God.  
Jesus shed His precious blood seven times during His life on earth.  They events were: 
•      Jesus shed His Blood in the Circumcision  
•      Jesus shed His Blood whilst praying in the Garden of Olives  
•      Jesus shed His Blood in the scourging  
•      Jesus shed His Blood in the crowning with thorns  
•      Jesus shed His Blood while carrying His cross  
•      Jesus shed His Blood in the crucifixion  
•      Jesus shed His Blood and water when His side was pierced 
 
The Power of the Precious Blood 
"I adore You, O Precious Blood of Jesus, flower of creation, fruit of virginity, ineffable instrument of the Holy Spirit, and I rejoice at the thought that You came from the drop of virginal blood on which eternal Love impressed its movement; You were assumed by the Word and deified in His person. I am overcome with emotion when I think of Your passing from the Blessed Virgin's heart into the heart of the Word, and, being vivified by the breath of the Divinity, becoming adorable because You became the Blood of God." (St. Albert the Great)
 

At their recent meeting, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops had continuous Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament for "healing and peace."   They encouraged parishes and communities to have ongoing Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.  In these dark months of woundedness, pain and violence we need to turn to the Precious Blood of Jesus in the Eucharist, for healing, peace, and light.  
"What power we have in the Precious Blood of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist!  He is there to protect us, to be our refuge and our redemption.  (In Exodus 12, God told Moses to have His chosen people mark their door posts with the blood of an unblemished lamb, during the first Passover. Those who did this were spared when the Angel of the death passed by). This is why Archbishop Sheen said that we must call down the Blood of the Lamb, Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament.  For, he warned, when we stop calling down the Blood of the Lamb, we start calling down the blood of each other."  (From our book Bread of Life)      
"And the Lamb on the throne will shepherd them. He will lead them to springs of life-giving water" (Rev 7:17). 
"In the tumultuous events of our time, it is important to look to the Eucharist: it must be at the heart of the life of priests and consecrated people; the light and strength of spouses in putting into practice their commitment to fidelity, chastity and the apostolate; the ideal in education and in training children, adolescents and young people; the comfort and support of those who are troubled, of the sick and all who are weeping in the Gethsemane of life."  (Pope John Paul II)  
Precious Blood of Jesus, save us! 
"The only time our Lord asked the Apostles for anything was the night when He went into His agony.  But as often in the history of the church since that time, evil was awake, but the disciples were asleep.  That is why there came out of His anguished and lonely Heart a sigh: 'Could you not watch one hour with Me?'" (Mt 26:40).  Not for an hour of activity did he plead, but for an hour of friendship (Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen).  
 
St. Maria Goretti,  Patroness of Youth & Children of Mary, Feast-July 6 St. Maria of Italy (1890-1902), couldn't wait to make her First Communion.  She wanted to receive Jesus in the Holy Eucharist so that she could become more beautiful and pure like Him; she wanted Him to live in her, close to her heart.  After she received Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament for the first time, she stayed in Church for a long time after Mass to talk to Him. Maria's family lived with and worked for a farmer. His son Alessandro kept trying to make Maria sin against purity.  One day, when everyone else was working, Alessandro grabbed Maria and tried to make her sin.  Maria kept crying out for him to stop, and each time she did, he stabbed her. Courageously,   Maria resisted him and was stabbed fourteen times. St. Maria died the next day.  
"Look at Maria Goretti....  Like her, be capable of defending your purity of heart and body.  Be committed to the struggle against evil and sin.  Always esteem and love, purity and virginity." (Pope John Paul II, 1990)      
 
A Prayer for Priests 
O my God, help those priests who are faithful to remain faithful; to those who are falling, stretch forth Your Divine Hand that they may grasp it as their support.  In the great ocean of Your mercy, lift those poor unfortunate ones who have fallen, that being engulfed therein they may receive the grace to return to Your Great Loving Heart.  Amen.  Precious Blood of Jesus, protect them!
 
The Eucharist is the fruit of our Lords Passion. Jesus gave up His Body on the cross so that He may give you His Body in the Holy Eucharist. Jesus poured out His very last drop of Blood on the cross so that He may fill you with His Divine Love each time that you receive Him in Holy Communion and visit Him in Eucharistic Adoration! 
"The Eucharist, in the Mass and outside of the Mass, is the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, and is therefore deserving of the worship that is given to the living God, and to Him alone" (Pope John Paul II, September 29, 1979, Phoenix Park, Ireland) 
"The bread and wine, fruit of human hands, transformed through the power of the Holy Spirit into the body and blood of Christ, become a pledge of the 'new heaven and new earth,' announced by the Church in her daily mission." "In Christ, whom we adore present in the mystery of the Eucharist, the father uttered his final word with regard to humanity and human history." "To live the Eucharist, it is necessary, as well, to spend much time in adoration in front of the Blessed Sacrament, something which I myself experience every day drawing from it strength, consolation and assistance."  "How could the Church fulfill her vocation without cultivating a constant relationship with the Eucharist, without nourishing herself with this food which sanctifies, without founding her missionary activity on this indispensable support?" "To evangelize the world there is need of apostles who are 'experts' in the celebration, adoration and contemplation of the Eucharist" (Pope John Paul II, World Mission Message 2004).
 
The Power of the Precious Blood of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist  
 
"The Precious Blood belongs in an especial manner to men. Much more, therefore, does God invite them to come to its heavenly baths, and receive therein, not only the cleansing of their souls, but the power of a new and amazing life. Every doctrine in theology is a call to the Precious Blood.  Every ceremony in the Church tells of it . . . .  Every supernatural act is a growth of it. Everything that is holy on earth is either a leaf, bud, blossom or fruit of the Blood of Jesus. To its fountains God calls the sinner, that he may be lightened of his burdens. There is no remission of him in anything else.  Only there is his lost sonship to be found. The saints are no less called by God to these invigorating streams. It is out of the Precious Blood that men draw martyrdoms, vocations, celebacies, austerities, heroic charities, and all the magnificent graces of high sanctity.  The secret nourishment of prayer is from those fountains" (Father Faber, The Precious Blood).  
 

The Most Precious Blood of Jesus
July is traditionally associated with the Precious Blood of Our Lord. It may be customary to celebrate the votive Mass of the Precious Blood on July 1.

The extraordinary importance of the saving Blood of Christ has ensured a central place for its memorial in the celebration of this cultic mystery: at the centre of the Eucharistic assembly, in which the Church raises up to God in thanksgiving "the cup of blessing" (1 Cor 10, 16; cf Ps 115-116, 13) and offers it to the faithful as a "real communion with the Blood of Christ" (1 Cor 10, 16); and throughout the Liturgical Year. The Church celebrates the saving Blood of Christ not only on the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ, but also on many other occasions, such that the cultic remembrance of the Blood of our redemption (cf 1 Pt 1, 18) pervades the entire Liturgical Year. Hence, at Vespers during Christmastide, the Church, addressing Christ, sings: "Nos quoque, qui sancto tuo redempti sumus sanguine, ob diem natalis tui hymnum novum concinimus." In the Paschal Triduum, the redemptive significance and efficacy of the Blood of Christ is continuously recalled in adoration. During the adoration of the Cross on Good Friday the Church sings the hymn: "Mite corpus perforatur, sanguis unde profluit; terra, pontus, astra, mundus quo lavanturflumine", and again on Easter Sunday, "Cuius corpus sanctissimum in ara crucis torridum, sed et cruorem roesum gustando, Deo vivimus (194).

“It is mercy I desire”

In loving your enemy, you want him to be your brother. You do not love in him what he is but what you want him to be. Let us imagine some oak wood that has not been carved. A capabable craftsman sees this piece of wood that has been cut in the forest; he likes the wood. I do not know what he wants to make out of it but the artist does not love that piece of wood so that it might remain as it is. His art lets him see what the wood can become. He does not love the plain wood; he loves what he will make of it, not the rough wood.

That is how God loved us when we were sinners. For he said: “People who are in good health do not need a doctor; sick people do.” Did he love us sinners so that we might remain sinners? The craftsman saw us like a piece of rough wood coming from the forest and what he had in mind was the work he would draw out of it, not the wood from the forest.

It is the same with you: you see your enemy who opposes you, who overwhelms you with scathing words, who is harsh in his insults, who pursues you with his hatred. But you are attentive to the fact that he is a human being. You see everything that this person did against you, and you see in him that he was created by God. What he is as a human being is God’s work; the hatred he bears towards you is his own work. And what do you say to yourself? “Lord, be kind to him, forgive his sins, inspire him with fear of you, change him.” In that person you do not love what he is but what you want him to be. Thus, when you love your enemy, you love a brother.
