The Great Revolt Against Christ
http://catholicism.org ^ | October 14, 2008 | REV. MICHAEL MÜLLER, C.S.S.R

From the beginning of the world there have been two elements — the good and the bad-combating each other. ” There must be scandals,” says our Lord; St. Michael and Lucifer combat each other in heaven; Cain and Abel in the family of Adam; Isaac and Ismael in the family of Abraham; Jacob and Esau in the family of Isaac; Joseph and his brethren in the family of Jacob; Solomon and Absalom in the family of David; St. Peter and Judas in the company of Our Lord Jesus Christ; the Apostles and the Roman emperors in the Church of Christ; St. Francis of Assisi and Brother Elias, in the Franciscan Order; St. Bernard and his uncle Andrew, in the Cistercian Order; St. Alphonsus and Father Leggio in the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer; orthodox faith and heresy and infidelity, in the Kingdom of God on earth; the just and the wicked, in all places; in fact, where is the country, the city, the village, the religious community or the family, howsoever small it may be, in which these two elements are not found in opposition. The parable of the sower and the cockle is everywhere verified; even should you be quite alone, grace and nature will combat each other. “And a man’s enemies shall be they of his own household.” (Matth. x. 36.) Strange to say, not only the good and the wicked are found in perpetual conflict; but God, for wise ends, permits that even the holiest and best of men are sometimes diametrically opposed to one another and even incite persecution one against the other, though each one may be led by the purest and holiest of motives.

A long, but great read.

Father Müller, a heroic, learned, and orthodox Redemptorist Priest, was the 19th century Father Feeney. His book The Catholic Dogma (1888), from which we here extract the entire third chapter, is an excellent defense of Extra Ecclesiam Nulla Salus. As one would expect, the 19th century English usage he employs is different than what most modern-day Americans are used to reading. We have stayed faithful to the original in all archaic punctuation, spelling and usage. Despite any difficulty on this score, this piece is a classic of Catholic Polemics which will endure for many years to come.

Isaac and Ishmael never fought.

Isaac’s mother did however have Ishmael and his mother cast out into the desert to die. That was of course an evil act brought on by a lack of faith in God. God promised Abraham a great nation through Isaac. Isaac was in danger only in Sera’s mind, and she did not trust the very hand of God which protected Isaac.

Israel (and indeed the world) is still paying for that.

“...only in Sera’s mind...”

Not disagreeing in general, but...

I’m guessing Abraham and his penis were also not unaware of the events leading to Ishmael’s conception.

Like most husbands, perhaps Abe trusted God but feared Saria.
